Arnold GRAY Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Arnold Hall Gray Jr., 82, passed away at James River Convalescent Center after a long illness on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010.
He was born on April 30, 1928, in Newport News. Arnold was a Peninsula resident most of his life, but spent time living in Northern Virginia and Virginia Beach.
He attended public schools in Newport News, graduating from Newport News High School and attended Virginia Tech. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, The Knights of Columbus (4th Degree), and the American Legion Post 25.
Arnold attended the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and became a merchant marine as a junior engineer. Later he joined the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division. After his military service, he was employed by Virginia Electric and Power Co., retiring as plant engineer. He was an avid reader, naturalist and sail boat enthusiast.
He is survived by his sister, Ethelann G. Ponzo and husband, Ronald E. of Newport News; brother, Richard S. Gray and wife, Suzanne of N. Topsail Beach, N.C.; nephew, Ronald P. Ponzo of Newport News; and four nieces, Theresa P. Hoffman and husband, Kevin of Newport News, Sandra P. Oakley of Virginia Beach, Donna P. Delamain and fiancE, Kevin, and Babiche M. Slack of N.J.; four great-nieces; one great-nephew; and two great great-nieces.
The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at James River Convalescent Center for their compassion and excellent care extended to Arnold. We also wish to thank the Eucharistic Ministers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, who were so faithful in visiting and administering communion to Arnold.
At the request of Arnold, all services will be private.
