Dorothy SULLIVAN Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Dorothy Hooks Sullivan, 88, widow, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, died peacefully and went to be with her Lord and Savior on Oct. 7, 2010, after a fall at her home on Oct. 2, 2010.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Bonaguidi; second husband, John Joseph Sullivan; her brother, David R. Hooks Jr.; sister-in-law, Gloria Mae Hooks; and parents, Lynnie Rimes Hooks and David R. Hooks Sr.
Born in New Orleans, La., on Dec. 18, 1921, she was the eldest child and only daughter. She attended Sophie B Wright Girl's School in New Orleans. Through his career, Dorothy was at his side, making her own social group of the Gray Ladies, volunteering for many groups with the Officers Wives Club and making many longtime friends. After her first husband's death in 1968, Dorothy married John Joseph Sullivan in 1972. She continued to make and enjoy many lasting friendships. Her passions included raising her grandson, entertaining friends, playing scrabble (drinking wine), spending time with special friends, Patricia Jaworski and Susanne and Vincent Morrison, family gatherings, crab picks, eating out and visiting with friends. She was a longtime member of St Jerome's Catholic Church and a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority since 2007.

Dear Deborah, Theresa, Carson, Al and Trevor John;

To have had such a great lady as Dorothy Sullivan in our lives has been a great blessing from God. Each person she has touched in life has known her in a different way. I have known Dot as a friend, and I will always cherish her memory. Each of you has known her in your own special way, with your own special memories. God could not have given to you a more loving and caring mother or grandmother. She was a very special lady, and the world has been a better place because of her presence. A special comment to Trevor: You have been blessed of God with the gifts of a great grandfather in Grandpa John, and two special grandmothers, Grandma Powell and Grandma Sullivan. You feel their loss; may you feel their presence and love in your heart.

Please accept the sympathies, condolences, and love of Miss Marie and me. God bless you.

DEAR DEBBIE AND THERESA, I WAS SADDEN TO HEAR OF YOUR MOTHER'S PASSING YESTERDAY.I HAVE SUCH FOND MEMORIES OF HER. DOTTIE WAS A WONDERFUL LADY AND A REAL FRIEND TO OUR FAMILY AND ESPECIALLY MY MOTHER. THEY WERE TRULY BEST FRIENDS.I CAN NOT GO ANY FURTHER WITHOUT MENTIONING DOTTIE'S SKILLS IN THE CULINARY ARTS. HER NEW ORLEANS STYLE BAR-B-QUE SHRIMP WAS LEGENDARY.I REMEMBER MAKING SURE I WAS INVITED OVER MRS. SULLIVAN'S HOUSE WHEN WHEN SHE WAS PREPARING THAT DISH,EVEN WHEN IT WAS AN "ADULTS ONLY" EVENING. MAY GOD BLESS
ALL OF YOU DURING THIS DIFFICULT TIME.

To have mothered such a smart, intense, charming and beutiful daughter as my colleague Theresa, let me please express my sympathy at your loss and my personal knowledge that we should only grieve to the extent our loss is controlled, because our loved ones have lead long and fruitful lives and now they can rest.

Dear Deborah & Theresa,

We have many years of history. Many wonderful memories. I think of her every morning when I brush my teeth. She told me I had to brush the "sweaters off my teeth" first thing in the morning. I looked for sweaters for a long time as a child. Now, I remember with a smile. That is just one of so many.

We were blessed to have her in our lives.
Love, Bonnie Marie
