Julia MOORE Obituary

HAMPTON - Julia Love Swindell Turnage Moore passed away on Dec. 1, 2010, at the age of 86. Diagnosed with Alzheimer's, she spent the last few years living in Newport News Rehabilitation and Nursing Home.
Born in the small town of Hobucken, N.C., Julia was a long time resident of Hampton Roads, with a move in 1967 to Massachusetts and Rhode Island before returning to Virginia in 1973. She was the daughter of James and Mary Ollie Swindell and the last surviving child of 10. Until the time of her diagnosis, she faithfully attended Bethel Temple Assembly of God.
Julia was a very gifted woman and could make any garment, with or without a pattern, including wedding dresses, men's suits and ties. She enjoyed drawing and painting so much that in her sixties, she signed up for a college course to learn technique. She has left her children with a part of her because of the paintings she did. Never satisfied with the outcome, she'd always want to 'tweak' them. She also did a number of beautiful ceramic pieces that are in the homes of her children. Her talent will be remembered and cherished by her family.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Roy B. Turnage Jr. and Herbert H. Moore; and a great-granddaughter, Samantha M. Johnson.
She is survived by her five children, Peggy Ancell Farmer (David) of Poquoson, Cecile Turnage Hopkins (Robert) of Weymouth, Mass., Roy 'Buddy' Turnage III (Tidy) of Williamsburg, Mary Lynn Moore Calhoun of San Diego, Calif., and Herbert Kevin Moore of Oklahoma; 16 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and countless nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, at Peninsula Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, in Peninsula Memorial Park, officiated by the Rev. Daniel Cromer of Emmaus Baptist Church.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to the Virginia Sids Alliance, 1030 Copper Stone Circle, Chesapeake, VA 23320.
Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Cecile, Peggy & Buddy - I met your mom many years ago but I still remember her fried chicken! We visited Virginia just after we got married and your mom was so gracious to us. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Peggy and family, although I never met your mom, I always felt as though I knew her thorough you. She was a real firecracker and I am sure that she is giving St. Peter a hard time even now. Please take comfort in knowing that your mom is walking the golden streets of her heavenly home and taking care of Sam. Please let me know of anything that I can do to aide you in this difficult time. Love to all.
