Lucille KATES Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Lucille Wright Kates, 97, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010, at The Newport.
She was born in Newport News, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Wright. She was a graduate of Newport News High School and Blackstone College in Blackstone, Va.
She was an active clubwoman and served as president of the Woman's Club of Newport News, 1962-1964, when the club moved from West Avenue and before it was at its current location on J. Clyde Morris Blvd. Until her final illness, she was knitting caps for the club's project of supporting women and children in a refugee facility in Africa. She was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Newport News.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley W. Kates.
Survivors include her daughter, Suzanne Edwards and her husband, Robert; granddaughters, Dr. Cary Edwards Moore and her husband, Brett of Newport News, and Dr. Christine Edwards Dittrich and her husband, Darren of Dallas, Texas; great-grandchildren, Allison, Natalie and Sophie Moore, and Rylie-Mae and Spencer Dittrich.
The family thanks the staff at The Hidenwood and The Newport, for their kindness and attention to Lucille; and to St. Stephens Episcopal pastors and the women's group, Daughters of the King, for their visits and spiritual support.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 1, 2010, at Peninsula Memorial Park, officiated by the Rev. Scott Baker.

Suzanne,
All of the Yevak Family have fond memories of your mother and father. I still wear a sweater that she made for me when I was 15 (many yesrs ago). Mother and Daddy cherished their close friends Lucille and Wesley. Now they are all together again having a good ole time. love to you and your family,
