Maxine FORBES Obituary

POQUOSON - Maxine 'Sue' M. Forbes died Nov. 15, 2010. Sue was born in 1929 to John Benjamin Mayes and Elsie Mae Mays in Madison County, Va.
The Mays' moved to Newport News, where Sue graduated from Newport News High School. She was employed by VEPCO where she made many lifelong friends. She retired from BASF as the benefit's coordinator after more than 20 years. She was a 50-year member of a women's bridge group filled with friends from high school, VEPCO, and church. She continued to lunch and socialize with her friends throughout the vibrancy of her life. She was a devoted member and supporter of Hilton Christian Church.
Sue's house was home to numerous family gatherings. Most famous were Christmases where as many as 50 family and friends would come to enjoy her warmth. Christmas was a special time for her. She gave without want. She learned to sew by creating outfits for her nieces' dolls and tirelessly made her father's peanut butter fudge for her best friend and sister, Peggy, and all of Peggy's children and grandchildren. Sue was caregiver to her mother, Nannie, for many years and never regretted a second. She was happiest cooking for those she loved. Sue was an earnest fan of her son's baseball teams and a spirited pooh-pooher of any opponent. Once her grandchildren were born, she spent her hours babysitting and doting on them. We believe many of their finest memories were of the times staying at Mimi's home.
Her parents and her sister, Peggy Darnley, preceded her in death.
Sue was a much-loved mother to Betsy Forbes Willard (John) and Jack Forbes (Sue). She was Mimi to Kailey, Todd, Cole and Cam, who owned her heart. She was a favorite aunt to Donna Kerr, Cam and Benny Darnley and Cathy Stuman.
Sue lived her life loving and caring for her family. She will live in our hearts forever. We were blessed to call her ours and we know, as does she, that she is with her Savior.
In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to The Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula, 9912 Hosier Street, Newport News, VA 23601.
The family would like to share their appreciation and thanks for the wonderful care, support, and love the employees at Bayside Convalescent Center showed Sue during her four-year stay.
A memorial service will be held at Hilton Christian Church located at 100 James River Drive, Newport News on Nov. 18, 2010, at 4 p.m. Visitation will follow immediately after the service.

Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. We have some great memories of sitting with Sue watching our son Brian and his best friend Jack playing baseball. The trip we took with Sue to Tennessee (for baseball) was an experience we will always remember. Sue was a terrific lady and we loved her.

Ahhh, Those delightful Christmas gatherings at Sue's. Family, food, and the joy that filled the house. They were the highlight of the holidays!

Sue filled the room with laughter! I used to ration the container of Uncle Ben's famous Peanut Butter Fudge for weeks thereafter, trying to make the holidays stretch on into the wintery months that followed. I steered clear of the rocket-powered egg nog then, but she would ply me with Miss Virginia's Drinking Custard.

Aunt Sue, thank you for teaching me the joy of the holidays and family. I'll miss you so.

I will always remember Christmas at Sue's. It was always warm & fuzzy over there. Don't really get that much anymore, so those memories I will always have & cherish. I know Sue is at peace now and has been reunited with our family angels. She is in good hands. I will miss you Sue.
