Mildred RANKIN Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Mildred Massey Rankin went to be with the Lord and joined Herbert, her husband of 69 years, on Jan. 9, 2011.
Fondly known as Babe, she was born in Newport News, Va., and always considered herself a lifelong Virginian, even though her later years were spent in Winter Haven, Fla. While living in Hampton and Newport News with her husband and three daughters, Mildred was active in Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church's altar society, as well as the Pin Oak garden club. A master gardener, Mildred was a great believer in getting her hands dirty to reap the rewards of her beautiful flower gardens. She passed this love on to her three daughters, Ellen, Carole and Teresa.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Webster Rankin Jr., who will rest at her feet never to be parted.
Mildred is survived by one brother, Ralph Eugene Massey and his wife, Mildred of Newport News; daughters, Ellen Powell-Lasher and her husband, Lee of Midlothian, Carole A. Rankin and Dieter Semder of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Teresa R. Johnson and her husband, Richard of Saint Augustine, Fla.; six grandchildren, Jason C. Powell and wife, Jennifer of Arlington, Va., Sean Key and wife, Julen of Palm Beach County, Fla., Erika L. Johnson of Orange Park, Fla., Heather P. Marshall and her husband, Robert of Glen Allen, Va., Lauren Key of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Kimberly M. Johnson of Austin, Texas; eight great-grandchildren, Nequoia, Lila, Sydney, Piper, Macy, Violet, Alexa and Watson.
Condolences can be paid to the family members at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 14, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, in the Day Chapel. The funeral Mass will begin at 11 a.m., Father Peter Tran will be officiating with interment following in Peninsula Memorial Park.

I was just beginning my family when I met Mildred and Herb during the Church of the Visitation's early days at Freeshade. Mildred always asked about my daughters on her return visits after her move to Florida, and it was such a delight to see her. I'll miss her, and will always remember her lovely smile. May you find her presence in many wonderful memories. My prayers and sympathy are with you.

Dear Ellen, Carole and Teresa: Your mother was a wonderful person. She will be greatly missed by all. Everyone enjoyed her on our last cruise and she loved sailing with our group. Just remember you have your memories. Our Love, Brian and Carolyn Sue

Sorry to hear of Mildred's passing. She and Herb were a wonderful part of The Church of the Visitation community during their Deltaville time. I have many good memories of Herb at the barbeque and Mildred in the kitchen. My prayers and best wishes for consolation in your loss.
