Robert L. JENKINS

NEWPORT NEWS - Lt. Col. Robert L. Jenkins (USAF, Ret.), 90, passed away at home in the early hours of Friday, Sept. 24, 2010.
He is survived by his son, Dr. Robert T. Jenkins of Toronto, Canada; and by his sister, Pat Oakerson of New Palestine, Ind.
Of his quarter century in uniform, Bob was particularly proud of his first combat assignment in WWII as a pilot with the 317th Fighter Squadron of the 325th Fighter Group, 'The Checkertail Clan'. He retired a decorated and respected staff officer at Headquarters, Tactical Air Command.
Bob will be dearly missed by his surviving family and friends, particularly Sally and David Spreder. His enjoyment of gardening, wood working, reading, and good conversation stayed with him to the end. Bob was a diligent student of the Bible and taught the adult Sunday school class for many years at Hilton Christian Church of which he was a longtime member. He also was a Master Mason and member of Warwick Lodge No. 336, AF&AM. Bob was a loving and devoted husband and father and was steadfast in his Christian faith throughout his days.
A private graveside service was conducted Monday, Sept. 27.
