Shirley ANDREWS Obituary

YORKTOWN - Shirley Bell Reynolds Andrews died on June 24, 2010, after a long courageous battle with cancer.
Shirley graduated from Newport News High School in 1951, and went on to the University of Alabama for several years. She began pursuing a career as a Substance Abuse Counselor, in 1973, having worked at Eastern State, Serenity House and with the ASAP Program. Since her retirement in 1995, she worked part-time at Williamsburg Place and The William J. Farley Center in Williamsburg. She enjoyed walking the beach, collecting fossils, doing handwork, writing poetry and reading.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Lucetta Webb and Barmie Bell; her brother, James Winston Bell; and her sister, Dorothy Bell Eastman.
Survivors include her daughters, Barbara and Bob Ashe of Seaford, and Nancy and Tom McDonald of Williamsburg; her grandson, Michael and Amanda McDonald of Gloucester; three great-grandchildren, Breanne Lee McDonald, Vincent Michael McDonald and Makenzie Adele Crites. She will be missed by her faithful, loyal and loving dog, Honey Bee; also by her devoted and supportive friends, Linda and Reed Jones, Lorraine and Jerry Adams, and Carole Lott. A special thank you to Neta Badgett, for her unconditional love and support.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Heartland Hospice and their wonderful staff, Winnie from Senior Corp and her special angel, Wanda Ward, who cared for Shirley during the last months of her illness. We would also like to thank the doctors and staff at Virginia Oncology.
She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. Shirley will be remembered for her relentless courage toward her illness. She had a zest for life and a keen sense of humor. She had a giving spirit and was always willing to help others when she could.
A service to celebrate Shirley's life will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 28, at Peninsula Funeral Home. Immediately following the service, the family will receive friends until 8:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 11835 Canon Blvd, Suite A-102, Newport News, VA 23606.

To the family of my friend Shirley (especially Barbara), there are no words to convey my sadness. But I have to smile and feel joy at knowing Shirley for the short time I did (Co-worker at Williamsburg Place). We shared a special bond that I will hold dear always. God bless her spirit and I will cherish her memory.

Dear Nancy and Barbara, dear Michael and to all of Shirley's family,
Words are so inadequate at a time like this. Know that my heart, my thoughts and my daily prayers will be with you...I took care of both my mother and father until they graduated to heaven, yet, even having been where you are, the journey for each of us is deeply personal and so painful because the loved one we cherished for so long is now gone...I know that Shirley loved you all so dearly because I could see it in her eyes and hear it in her voice when spoke of each of you. Each and every one of you is a unique and special reflection and expression of her love.
She is in the arms of our Lord and as God's word tells us, precious in His sight is the death of one of his saints. He welcomes His children at the end of their journey...she is Home at last and we are all richer for having known her.
Love you,
Celia

Barbara,
I was saddened to hear of your moms passing. She was a strong woman who really fought hard. I was truly blessed to have met and had been able to care for such a remarkable woman and to see the love you had for your mom was unbleievable. You stood right beside and never gave up, you fought the fight with her. She will truly be missed. Just know she is truly a special angel that will continue to put up a fuss. You will have a special angel watching over you now. Just take it one day at a time and I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. Always know I am a phone call away. Love always

Barbara & Nancy
I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope you can find comfort in knowing that she is now in peace and no longer suffering. True to her character, she fought to the very end. She has helped so many people in her lifetime, and her sense of humor has brought many laughs and smiles. She will be greatly missed. If there is anything I can do for either of you, please call.
