T. MCCUBBIN Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - T. Roderick McCubbin, 94, died Friday Dec. 3, 2010 at Riverside Regional Medical Center.
A native of Harrisburg, Pa., Mr. McCubbin came to the Peninsula in 1975 as the manager of the Coliseum Mall. Prior to this, Mr. McCubbin had managed malls in Cherry Hill, N.J., Louisville, Ky., and Harundale (Glen Burnie), Md. Although Mr. McCubbin retired in 1983, Mall Properties asked him to return to work, as a tenant coordinator, for the major mall renovation that occurred in 1989. At the same time Mr. McCubbin retired, his wife Kathryn joined the faculty of then Christopher Newport College (now a University). As a result of this association, Mr. McCubbin became interested in the college and began working, as a volunteer, in the athletic department. Interest in CNU's athletic teams and campus activities became Mr. McCubbin's chief activity until his death. Mr. McCubbin was a graduate of Choate School in 1935, attended Haverford College and was a graduate of Rutgers University in 1939. He was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
During World War II, Mr. McCubbin served as a S/SGT. in the 761.FA.Btn seeing service in France, Belgium, and Germany. After the end of the war, the 761st was no longer needed as a field artillery unit and was converted into Security Guard work. This entailed supervision of a displaced persons camp, a prisoner war camp, and a G.I. Stockade. Prior to coming home for discharge, Staff Sgt. McCubbin was sent to the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, as part of the T.W.C.A. program in the effect of the ETO after the war.
In addition to his wife, Kathryn, Mr. McCubbin is survived by a son, Thomas A. McCubbin of Toronto, Ontario, Canada; a daughter, Mrs. Gayle Young of Columbia, Md.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Mary Kelly of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; six grandchildren, one step-grandchild and three great-grandchildren.
Burial will take place at the family plot in Rolling Green Cemetery in Camp Hill, Pa.

The Pusateri family loved and embraced "Rod" from the time he and Kathryn married. I personally always looked upon him as a solid and intelligent person. We will all miss him greatly and I commend my sister, Kathryn, for her seep devotion to Rod.
