Edward HOFFMAN Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - On Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, Edward Lee Hoffman passed peacefully into the arms of his Heavenly Father.
Ed was born March 16, 1922, to the late Edward Lee and Mabel MacLeod Hoffman in Lansdowne, Md. He attended Catonsville High School and the University of Maryland, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity, played football and graduated with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He began his career with NACA at Langley Air Force Base. Our country began its space exploration during his time with NACA/NASA and he worked on related projects, such as heat resistance capabilities of external materials on our space capsules. He was involved with a research team which developed our current techniques and manual on how to safely land an aircraft on water. He was active in the Engineers Club, American Society for Metals, and was an avid golfer and sailor.
Ed was a member of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church for over 50 years and served the church as a deacon, elder, and treasurer of the church.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Mae Harris Hoffman; daughter, Barbara Hoffman Harkins of Richmond; granddaughter, MacKenzie Lee Harkins of Dallas, Texas; grandson, Chandler Harrison Harkins of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; and a sister, Freda Fletcher of Cumberland, Md.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012, at Peninsula Memorial Park. A memorial service, to celebrate his life, will be 12:30 p.m., at Hidenwood Presbyterian Church, officiated by the Rev. William G. Lamont and Mr. Darren Utley, with a reception to follow in the McKeithen Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hidenwood Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund; The Alzheimer's Foundation, to continue research; or the Peninsula SPCA.
Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

I remember the fun times we had at your house when Ed called Barbara and me "Barbara Square." He was a very nice person, and I know you will always have fond memories. My Mom, who "disremembers" alot these days, saw the obituary in the news paper and called me right away. She said she was sorry she cannot attend the service since she is somewhat incapacitated, but she sends her prayers.

I played golf with Ed for many years and worked with him during the years the NASA Golf Assn. managed the 14th hole for the PGA and LPGA tournaments at Kingsmill Golf Course. He was a special individual who did some great work at NASA concerning aircraft water landings. I will miss him but happy I was able to see him two weeks ago in his room at The Newport. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

My regards to Ed's family as they have lost a loved one. I knew Ed, worked with him in the Materials Division at Nasa, and played a lot of golf with him. I have very good memories of time spent with ED. We have all lost a dear and close friend.
