Mrs Batten and Family -

I offer you my deepest condolence at Art's passing. We were great friends at St Mike's and comrades in arms. I haven't seen nor spoken to Art since graduation though I am sure we passed closely many times over our Air Force careers. I read about his death in the St Mike's magazine this week, and was deeply saddened.
Remember your times with Art and I am sure your pain will be eased.
I will keep Art, you, and your family in my prayers.

Ann Marie, Chris and Mark,
I'm so saddened by Art's passing. He was one of my closest friends at St. Michael's College and helped me greatly in my studies. I came to St. Michael's without a foreign language background and Art had the patience and knowledge helping in French for the two required years. We'd meet prior to class and my pal would go over my assignments correcting and instructing me.
Sophmore year, he was also helpful with biology. I can still remember when we had a practicle with a disected frog. He managed to bring a disected frog back to his single room and we'd go over the parts of the frog in studying for the test. Boy did his room smell of formaldahyde.
The last time we met was when I was at a company conference in Washington, D.C. and he was in Lower Va. so we decided to meet half way, in Richmond. We had an enjoyable dinner at a restaruant that he researched, it used to be a fire house.
I'll miss my friend every day and my wife, Diana and I have Art and you in our prayers.

Dear Ann Marie and Family; We were so saddened to hear of Art's passing. We have such fond memories of our times together in Germany and the kindness you showed by attending our Swiss wedding. Boy, that WAS a long time ago! And of course we've appreciated the Christmas card updates over the years. May God give you joy in the memories and hope for the future. We pray for God's comforting presence at this sad time. Love,

Dear Batten family; I just heard of Maj. Battens passing. I give him the salute he deserves and hope they play TAPs at his interment. Although I have not kept in touch with Art since high school, I have thought of him often. It is so sad to lose another class mate and Comrade in Arms. Who knows we may have even been stationed together in Thailand. God Bless and may Art Rest in peace. For his Last inspection Jesus will have him sit beside him, because Art has spent his time in Hell. Thank you and Art for your service to our children and country. David E. Clapp, Msgt. I have now just received word that Arthur as passed away.. How very sad. As a classmate at GHS I can remember just how diligent he was in his work studies. I was envious. He was quite the brilliant student, as I am sure he filled his entire life in the same direction. I had called him a few years ago about a class reunion and he was all for it. I am so deeply sorry it never came to fruition. But, yet if we have one, I shall make sure that he will be remember with honors. He was always a great in High School and in Life. Bless you dear Arthur. You shall not be forgotten in the class of GHS 1962. Keep the Heavens Alive. Love and hugs from all of us. Claudette Jolicoeur

To the Batten Family:
Arthur & I sat next to each other throughout our childhood school years (due to the alphabet!) As our lives moved on, we lost touch. It is heartwarming to read here about his life continuing as it began as a kind, generous of spirit person leading an exemplary life in his community of friends and peers.
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. With love

Dear Batten family, As a childhood friend of Art's, I am saddened to hear of your loss. Among other fond memories, I remember our summertime visits as teens to the Puritan in Manchester where we would split an order of fried clams. It meant a lot to my mother, Lois, when you, Art and your twins would visit her when you were in Goffstown. My wife, Joan, joins me in sending our condolences.

Dear Ann Marie, Mark and Chris,

I was so saddened to receive the news of Arthur's passing. With the many years I had at Gloria Dei and the two years I taught the boys, I have many fond memories of Arthur. He was a devoted husband, father, and Boy Scout leader. In fact, I think most of my memories feature him in his BSA uniform. My prayers are with your family during this most difficult time.
Love and God Bless, Connie Long

Dear Batten family,

It was my pleasure to meet and work with Art for a number of years while working for the VEC's Norfolk Local office. Art was alway pleasant and so eager to lend his support to our staff and clients. He always went above and beyond whenever others were being appreciated but never wanted any recognition for the kind things he did. He was most passionate towards the concerns and needs of the veterans.

I was so sad to know that he is gone from our presence but never from our hearts. His smile and personality was always bright. I pray that you all will lean on Jesus and find peace in all of the wonderful memories you have to cherish.

To the Batten Family,
How saddened I am to have seen Art's obit in this Sunday's paper. I knew Art for many years with our affiliation with the Gloucester-Mathews Job Referral Service. I will always remember his positive outlook on life and the true caring he showed to those of us who had the privilege of working with him. He enjoyed a challenge and always met the mark. I considered him a mentor and a good friend, and will miss being able to pick up the phone and chat whenever I could. May you find comfort in knowing that his spirit will always live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

With deepest sympathy,

To the Batten Family:
I have had the pleasure of being Art's co-worker and colleague throughout his VEC career, having hired him to work in our Norfolk office.
Art was a true gentleman, in every sense and a valued friend. He will be missed.

The entire Byrum household is saddened to learn of Art's passing. Art was a special man who directly and indirectly impacted the lives of so many young men (and at least one young lady). Nancy and I couldn't think of a better man to mentor our son. Mike was so proud to have Art pin his Eagle Scout medal on him as he stood shoulder to shoulder with his father and grandfather. Katherine took a special liking to Art as the lone little sister to 12 scouts when she accompanied the troop on the 100-mile bike ride. Art always referred to her as "Miss Katherine" and taught her to tie knots - a skill she still retains. She kept him updated on her high school and college graduation as well as her completion of a Philmont trek. He will always be special to her. We share the loss of a great friend, father, Scouter and man. Go in peace Art, you'll be missed.

What I will always remember about Art, was his gift with words. He always had something profound to say and wasn't afraid to take risks. He gave me the chance to grow as a professional, and the provided me with the support of a mentor and friend. He has made an everlasting impression on me and will be dearly missed...may he rest in peace.

Ann Marie, Chris and Mark,

I can only begin to know the extent of your loss, but will always think of Art with a sense of celebration in my heart and a smile on my face. He had a way of seeing the world in all of its richness and folly, and never failed each day to grasp and enjoy each moment. He brought this joy de verve to all he did, and inspired us to do the same.

He was more then just the “Office Manager” to those of us who had the pleasure of knowing him in the Williamsburg office. He was a leader who encouraged us to do our best for everyone we endeavored to assist. He was a friend and mentor, sharing freely of his knowledge and experience. Art took pleasure in our successes, commiserated in our failings, and always helped us to stay focused on the mission of helping others.

The numbers of people whose lives have been bettered and enriched due to Art being in this world is truly incalculable. I can think of no finer legacy.

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.
