Carl Bonner Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Carl Gilbert Bonner, affectionately known as "Poppy" and "Butch", was born on Jan. 17, 1949, the first of three children born to the late Ira and Georgia Mae Bonner, of Fairhope, Ala.
On Nov. 10, 2009, Carl received his call home to eternal rest, after a courageous battle with many health problems. He was a loving and caring person and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Carl graduated from James Blair High School and later enlisted in the Marine Corps, where he served his country in the Vietnam War for 13 months. Upon his discharge from the Corp, he worked for Dow Badische and after several years took a Civil Service position with the Norfolk Naval Air Station as an airplane mechanic, where he retired.
On April 11, 1968, he married the former Linda Carol Russell. From that union, two daughters were born, the two loves of his life.
Carl loved sports and his favorite football team was the Dallas Cowboys.
His passions were working with his hard cooking and spending time with his three grandchildren. To many, he was extremely generous and helpful. He had an abundance of family and friends who remember him saying, "I'll take care of it". He never met a stranger.
He leaves to cherish his blessed memories, his daughters, Angela Westfall and Cassandra Lynn Bonner; his grandchildren, Andrew Westfall, Bianca Bonner and Chiya Lawson; and also joining in his celebration of life are his sisters, Sylvia Bonner, Jacqueline Bonner and Jolie Bonner; his favorite niece, Kenya Coleman; a host of uncles, aunts, cousins and many caring friends.
Mr. Bonner may be viewed in the funeral home beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009. After which, there will be a gathering of family and friends at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, in the funeral home. Final services for Mr. Bonner will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, in Twin Beech AME Zion Church, Fairhope, Ala.
Professional service entrusted to the staff of Whiting's Funeral Home, Williamsburg, Va., 757-229-3011. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Cass, Knowing that I share with you today and in the days to come is not just something to say, but something that I mean. You held me up many days and I will be the shoulders that you need (anytime). God looked down and saw that Poppy was the addition that He needed in His garden. So He picked him, leaving you and your family with all the wondnerful memories to share. Please find comfort in knowing that Poppy is no longer in any pain and from here on there is just beautiful rest. I love you just like you are a part of me. "Gran-Ma"

Sylvia, Jackie, Angie & Cassandra & Family,

God saw Carl getting tired and a cure was not to be, so He put His arms around him and whispered "come to me." Although you loved him dearly, you could not make him stay, his golden heart stopped beating, and hardworking hands at rest, God broke your hearts to prove to you, He only takes the best.
May you find comfort in knowing that God loves you and will keep you in his care.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
