Carl BEALE Obituary

SMITHFIELD - On April 5, 2010, Carl M. Beale Jr., after a brief illness and surrounded by his family, passed into eternal peace.
Carl was born on Feb. 8, 1924, in Isle of Wight County to the late Carl M. Beale and Lucille Bailey Beale. He grew up in Smithfield, Va., as the youngest of three siblings. Upon graduation from Smithfield High School, he attended VPI until he was called into the U.S. Navy and trained to fly Corsairs and numerous other planes during his World War II tour of duty. Upon completing his military service, he returned to VPI with his bride, E. Lane Gale Beale, to complete degree requirements in Engineering.
After graduation Carl returned to his hometown of Smithfield, Va., where he owned and operated Beale Construction Company. He served on the Smithfield Town Council for 17 years, 12 of which he was the mayor. He was a member of the Smithfield Baptist Church. He was a Masonic Veteran and Master Mason, a past master of the Smithfield Union Lodge #18, a 32-degree member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, a life member of Khedive Temple Shriners, a Jester of the Royal Order of Jesters, Court No. 075 Norfolk and a past president of the Suffolk Shrine Club.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, E. Lane Gale Beale; three sons and their families, Carl Beale III and wife, Karen of Williamsburg, Roger Beale of Smithfield and Richard Beale and wife, Teresa of Austin, Texas. "Daddy Carl" holds a special place in the hearts of his nine grandchildren, Carl Beale IV, Robert Beale, Dana Bradford, Casey White, Derrick Beale, Lane Beale, Adrienne Beale, Emerson Beale and Madison Beale. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Evelyn Dressler of Birmingham, Ala., and several dear nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sara Beale Williams.
Arrangements are being handled by Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, where the family will be receiving on Wednesday, April 7, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. A celebration of Carl's life with Masonic rites will be held at the Smithfield Baptist Church, 100 Wainwright Dr, Smithfield, at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 8, followed by interment at Saint Luke's Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Smithfield Baptist Church, the Smithfield Fire Department, 310 Institute St, Smithfield, VA 23430 or the Isle of Wight Rescue Squad, 1802A Church St, Smithfield, VA 23430.
