Catherine MILES Obituary

MATHEWS - Dr. Catherine Ellis Miles, 91, formerly of Mathews, died May 21, 2010, in Tampa, Fla.
Catherine's sharp intelligence and passion for learning led her to a successful career and for 25 years she served as Chairman of the Accounting Department at Georgia State University. While serving in this position she attended Emory University Law School and received her J.D. degree. In addition to holding two doctorates, one in accounting and one in law, she received many honors and distinctions. She was the first person to receive a Ph.D. in Accounting from the University of Alabama where her portrait now hangs in the lobby of the School of Business. She was also honored as Atlanta's Woman of the Year in Education. Catherine was professionally viewed as tough but very much a southern lady. Her grandchildren particularly enjoyed their summers on the Chesapeake Bay with her and her great seafood cooking, kind hearted nature and sense of humor. She lived a full and vibrant personal and professional life and was loved and respected by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by husbands, James Miles and Elmo McGinty; and by daughter, Maxine Bayly.
She is survived by daughter, Dr. Jeannette Pipkin; grandchildren, Duane Bayly, Brittan Goetz, Tiffany Alexander, Christa Groves; sons-in-law, Joseph Bayly, Robert Pipkin; seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services officiated by the Rev. Stephen Young will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. Entombment will follow in Windsor Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
