Charles COOPER Obituary

Charles Edwin Cooper, 78, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010, at his home after a long illness.
Born Aug. 16, 1932, he was a native of Rocky Mount, N.C., and lived in Yorktown and Newport News, Va., 50 years before moving to Lewisburg, W.Va., in 1996. He was the son of the late James D. Cooper Sr.
and Hattie Mae Pitt Cooper. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, W. Lee Cooper and Neal Cooper.
Charlie served with the U.S. Army in Occupational Duty in Japan and Germany. He served in the 25th Infantry Division during the Korean War, earning two Bronze Stars. His last duty station was at USMA/West Point, NY in support of Cadets. He was discharged from Fort Eustis, Va., in 1957 and worked under civil service for the Department of the Army for an additional 24 years for a total of 35 years service.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving and devoted wife of 50 years and 11 months, Jean Quick Cooper; one brother, James D.
Cooper and wife, Alice of Georgia; son, Steven S. Cooper and wife, Kelly of Yorktown, Va.; daughter, Pamela Franklin of Yorktown, Va.; four grandchildren, Joshua and Peyton Cooper of Yorktown, Va., Ryan Haney of Charlotte, N.C., and Aaron Gundersen of Yorktown, Va.; four great-grandchildren, Kaylei Haney of Poquoson, Va., Arianna Gundersen of Yorktown, Va., McKenna Haney of Charlotte, N.C., and Avril Gundersen of Yorktown, Va.; two nieces, Myra and Lisa; several nephews; and a host of friends.
Charlie will be deeply missed by all who knew him and loved him.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8, at Gethsemane Baptist Church in Frankford with Pastor Marshall Cochran officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Morgan Funeral Home in Lewisburg. A visitation will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9 at Weymouth Funeral Home in Newport News, Va., followed by a graveside service with military honors in Peninsula Memorial Park at 3 p.m.
