Dorothy NICHOLS Obituary

HAMPTON - Dorothy Hildreth Nichols went to meet her Lord and Savior on Aug. 30, 2010.
She was born Dec. 8, 1910, in Pemberton County, W.Va., the first of 10 children, to Ernest and Julia Mae Bowman. Dot was a loving, strong, caring and joyful mother, wife, grandmother, friend and patriot. Her love of walking and the stars and stripes were evident in her everyday life. Dot was an avid gardener and looked vibrant on her three-wheel bike. Inducted as the first female member of the Phoebus Lions Club (1993) she achieved many awards including the Melvin Jones Award and many 1st and 2nd place fundraiser titles for Journey for Sight. She faithfully worshiped at Langley Christian Church for many years and most recently at Smith Memorial Baptist.
Dot was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Ulsaker; husband, Kenneth Nichols; sisters, Gussie Reely and Nina Seaman; brother, Clifford Bowman; and grandson, Stefan Ulsaker.
She is survived by her siblings, Eunice Yingling (Al), Ernest Bowman, Bethena Bennett, Marguerite LeBeau, Mabel Good, Bonnie Showalter (Buddy); and her family that spread five generations; children, Sam Ulsaker (Melva), Lara Lauder, Jerry Nichols (Roxie), Connie Pope (Chester), Carol Washburn (Ken), George Nichols (Carol Hayes); grandchildren, Sherri Horun, Scott Ulsaker (Angie), Tammy Wenthe (Richard), Todd Ulsaker (Mary), Melissa Ulsaker, Shane Neifert (Sherry), Julie Ridlon, Tere Clark (Jen), Leonard Pope (Kathy), Kara Sellers, Amanda Nichols; great-grandchildren, Shaun Lutman, Reagan Mashaney, Danielle Moss, Seth Ulsaker, Hallee Gorrell, Dustin Cronister, Halley Wenthe, Brette, Christian and Ally Ulsaker, Jessica Nelson, Rachel Pinto, Seth, Aaron and Rebekah Neifert, William, George, and James Ridlon, Makensey, Ashtyn and Kirsten Clark, Kain and Justin Pope; great-great-grandchildren, Austin Dahlenburg, Abygale and Maggi Mashaney, Maddie and Maelee Moss, Kennedy and Braydon Gorrell, Annelise Pinto.
Her celebration of life will be held at Langley Christian Church on Sept. 18 at 3 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Langley Christian Church. She will be laid to rest with her husband, Kenneth Nichols at Arlington National Cemetery on Oct. 13, 2010.

Miss Dot was one of the first people I met when I moved to Hampton. She was an amazingly kind and caring person and a wonderful neighbor. My deepest sympathy to her family and friends. She was respected, loved and admired by all who met her.
