Ethel Russell Obituary

HAMPTON - Ethel L. Russell entered into her eternal rest on Oct. 22, 2009, at Sentara Careplex Hospital.
She was a lifelong resident of the Peninsula and a 1940 graduate of Huntington High School. She retired from Eastern State Hospital after 17 years of service as a Psychiatric Nurses Aid.
She was a former member of the Redeemed Church of God in Hampton where she served as church clerk, organist and devoted choir member. She is currently a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, Newport News.
She is survived by her son, Walter Russell III; four daughters, Carolyn Russell, Sharon Russell-Hunt, and Pamela McLaurin (Eugene) of Hampton, Va.; Sandra Russell Phillips of Richmond, Calif., and one stepdaughter, Dottie Merritte of Chester, Va.; 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.
Viewing will begin at noon and the family will receive guests at the Ronald C. Perkins Funeral Home, Hampton, on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, from 6 to 7 p.m. The homegoing service will be held at the Gethsemane Baptist Church, 3509, Chestnut Ave. Newport News, Va., Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, at noon. The eulogy will be delivered by the Rev. Dr. Dwight Riddick. Mrs. Russell will be placed in church by 10 a.m. Friday. Entombment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens. The family will gather at 314 Clay Street, Hampton, Va., by 11am.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial gifts be made to Gethsemane Baptist Church, Christ Community Outreach Center or Feed the Children.
