Ethel JONES Obituary

HAMPTON - On Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, Ethel Virginia Jones, was called home.
She was the only daughter born to the late McKinley and Estelle Edwards on May 12, 1930, in Nyack, N.Y. She received her early education in the Nyack Public School System and graduated from John Adams High School in 1948, when the family relocated to St. Albans, N.Y. Ethel was accepted to Howard University, but chose to marry her love, Erskine Givens. The union was brief due to Erskine's unexpected illness and untimely death. While working at Sunshine Biscuit Company, she met and later married, LeRoy W. Jones, who preceded her in death. After retirement she moved to Hampton, Va., to lived with her mother and be near her daughter, Sandra Slade and grandchildren, Tanya and Coleisha Slade.
She was a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church, Nyack, N.Y., where she was a choir leader and pianist, New Jerusalem Baptist Church, Jamaica, N.Y., serving as an usher, and Morning Star Baptist Church, Hampton Va.
She leaves to cherish her memory two devoted daughters, Sandra H. Slade of Hampton, Va., and DaRell Jones-Johnson of Richmond, Va.; two sons, Ronald Jones of Ridgespring, S.C., and LeRoy Jones Jr. of Far Rockaway, N.Y.; eight grandchildren, Tanya and Caleisha Slade, both of Hampton, Va., LeRoy III, Kimberly Talene, Corey, and Fallon Jones of Far Rockaway, N.Y.; Rhonda Jones of New York City, N.Y., and Ron Jones of Ridgespring, S.C.; 18 great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Lillian Jones of Ridgespring, S.C., and Jonella Jones of Far Rockaway, N.Y.; two sons-in-law, Kelvin W. Johnson of Richmond, Va., and Calvin Slade of Hampton, Va.; a special niece, Christianna Thomas of New York City, N.Y.; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Riverside Pace with special thanks to Doctors Pettijean and Evans, Rita, Carl and Margaret.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3, at Morning Star Baptist Church, 2717 N. Armistead Avenue, Hampton. Viewing will begin at 11 a.m., at the church until the hour of the service. Family and friends will assemble by 12:45 p.m., at the church. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall. Arrangements by Ronald C. Perkins Funeral Home.
