Ethel Hayes Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Mrs. Ethel W. Hayes answered the Master's call on Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009. She slipped into a peaceful sleep and entered into the "Land of Glory" in Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center. Her long and fruitful journey here on earth began on Sept. 18, 1911, the daughter of the late Maria and Anthony Wynn.
She was a lifelong and faithful member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. She served her church as a Deaconess, a member of the Deaconess' Board, the Hospitality Committee, the Pastor's Aide and as a Nurses' Aide. She was a truly devoted Christian and she will be missed by her loving family and friends.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Hayes; and her son, the Rev. William Byrd Jr.
She leaves to cherish her blessed memories, her daughter, Ethel DeVaughn; her brother, Elmo Wynn; her devoted care-giver, Sheila Coles; her three grandchildren; her eight great-grandchildren; and a host of other loving relatives and many caring friends.
A funeral service, celebrating the life she lived, will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009, in Mt. Gilead Baptist Church with Bishop William M. Dawson and the Rev. Morris Randall, officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Family and friends will assemble at 524 Dunning Street (Highland Park) by 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Mrs. Hayes may be viewed in the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday.
