Evelyn CRANE Obituary

LAKE GASTON, N.C. - Evelyn Michie Crane, 83, passed away on Monday, June 14, 2010, with family by her side.
She suffered from several strokes and was currently living at The Newport. Evelyn was born and raised in Newport News and was the daughter of William Edward Michie and Anita Jones Michie.
Evelyn graduated from Morrison High School and Madison College, and then taught in the Newport News Public School System for 20 years before she and her husband, "Pokey" moved to Lake Gaston, N.C. She was an avid "craftsperson" and loved doing crafts of all kinds. She especially liked painting lighthouses which she and Pokey visited on their many travels throughout the U.S. with friends and relatives.
Evelyn was a lifelong member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Newport News, though after moving to North Carolina she attended the Crane family church, Edgerton United Methodist. Evelyn was involved in many aspects of the church including the United Methodists' Women and helping run the church bazaar for many years.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her son, Scott Crane, as well as her brother, Bill Michie.
She is survived by her husband, Herman; her daughters, Skeeter Coleman and her husband, Johnny, Michie Powell and her husband, Bob; granddaughter, Michele Coleman Nestel; grandsons, John Coleman IV, Cameron and Jackson Powell, as well as her first great-grandchild, Maddie Nestel; her two sisters, Betty M. Francis and Allean M. Creech and her brother, George Michie, all of Newport News; a host of nieces and nephews and too many members of the Crane family to name.
Evelyn, also known as Mom, Gram, and Eff, will be sorely missed by all. Family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon on Friday, June 18, at Weymouth Funeral Home with Funeral Services to be held at noon. Interment will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the America Cancer Society, 11835 Canon Blvd. Suite A-102, Newport News, VA 23606, or Halifax / Northampton Habitat for Humanity, 14 East 2nd Street, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870. The family would like to thank the ladies at The Newport that grew to love Mom as much as we did.
Arrangements are by Weymouth Funeral Home. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Eff, as you now are re-united with our mother and brother and with your son, I know they are gladly receiving you as is your Savior. Walk those golden streets in your golden slippers, as Grannie would say. I'll miss my big sister who was always ready to be at my side in my times of need. Love ya!

To the Crane Family,
I was so sorry to hear of Mrs. Crane's passing. She was my 6th grade teacher at Sedgefield Elementary School in Newport News. My Sister and I saw her several years ago at Paul's Arts and Crafts and got to talk to her then. I always thought she was a sweet lady and a good teacher. You all have my deepest sympathy, I know she will be missed.
