Fred FERGUSON Obituary

HAMPTON - Fred Russell Ferguson passed away from melanoma cancer on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010. On Aug. 24, 1929, he was born in Ferrum, Va., to Oscar and Willie Ferguson.
He served in the Air Force from 1950-1954. His post military career included working on the C&O Railroad and Newport News Shipyard, until opening his own business. He retired from Ferguson's Used Cars in 2000.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 51 years, Edna Ferguson; two daughters, Tracy Ferguson and Diana Ferguson Hawkes (Bert); one grandson, Evan Ferguson Hawkes; two sisters, June Cutler and Shirley Ferguson and several cousins and nephews.
Fred especially enjoyed beach music, shag and country dancing, Nascar, and football (Redskins). He will be remembered by his family and friends as a kind and gentle soul who could fix anything and was the best father and husband anyone could hope for.
A special thanks to Heartland Hospice for the wonderful care; especially Sheena and Martha.
The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, at Altmeyer-Riverside Funeral Home. A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, in Parklawn Memorial Park.

Diana, Edna and Tracy,

My heart is breaking for you all in the loss of Mr. Ferguson. I know all to well the deep and conflicting sense of relief you are feeling that his suffering is over, but along with that the aching, hollow emptiness in your heart that he is gone from your lives (for now). I had a great deal of respect and admiration for Mr. Ferguson and knew him to be a man of compassion and integrity and a man who loved his family and knew how to enjoy life! My prayers for you all are sincere, from the heart and frequent and I'm here for anything you might need. Not only now, but in the days to come, I hope you know you can call on me.

With love and sympathy,
Kelly Birdsong
