Gary SCARLETT Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Gary Wayne Scarlett, 58, died on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at Riverside Regional Medical Center, due to complications following a massive stroke.
He was born at Elizabeth Buxton Hospital in Newport News on April 2, 1952. As a child, Gary attended First Baptist Church of Newport News and received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a young age. He later joined the church, but was an inactive member. Gary said he never felt so close to God as he did when he was in the woods amid God's creation.
In 1969, he joined his father in the family business, Newport News Mattress Co., which was purchased by Gary's grandfather in 1939 and closed April 2005. Gary married Carolyn D. Plessinger on July 2, 1988; he loved to laugh, hunt, fish and spending time with his friends and family. He was a longtime member of the V.P.S.A. (Virginia Peninsula Sportsman Association), serving a number of years as a judge. He was a member of both the R&R Hunt Club in Southampton County and the James River Rod & Gun Club in Charles City County.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert H. Scarlett Jr. and Mary R. Mitchell Scarlett.
Gary is survived by his wife, Carolyn; sister, Brenda S. Ussery and husband, Phil; brother-in-law, Howard Plessinger and wife, Roberta; niece, Lisa Kubyako and husband, Andy and Shannon Ussery and fiancE, Tony Alvarez; nephews, B.J. Ussery and Joe Plessinger; and two grandnieces and a grandnephew.
Gary will be greatly missed and his memory will be cherished by a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Peninsula Funeral Home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 9, in Peninsula Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Andrew Wayne Cook officiating and will conclude with final prayers graveside in Peninsula Memorial Park.
