George HARRIS Obituary

POQUOSON - George E. Harris, USAF SMSGT, retired from Langley AFB in 1978, lost his long battle with cancer on May 4, 2010, quietly at home with his family and loved ones at his side.
He leaves to cherish his memory all those whose lives he touched during his 74 years. His beloved wife of 34 years, Patricia Rollins Harris, has lost her best friend today. Also sadly missing him are his 11 Heaven sent Papillon Dogs, his toy poodle, Token, and his bed-partner for many years, Rudy the cat.
George is survived by his five sons, George D. (Jamie), John E. (Linda), Thomas J., Ronald A. (Meg), and Raymond J. (Terry). George will also have eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren to carry on his name. He is also survived by his brother-in-law and best friend, Jimmy Rollins; his stepfather, Frank Talan; his sister, Beverly Greene (Levi); and niece, Lisa Levine.
His many friends were also considered his family and were there for him when the good times weren't. Loyal and loving care from J. C. Holloway, SAM Shannon, RN, Inez Hill, Sharon Potter, Pearl & Bobby Tignor, Pat and Snookie White, Shirley Hardee, Karen King, Rita Mosser, Syd Holloway, Marsha Zanks, Sharon Hopkins, Lynn Arnold, Sherwood Emerson, and all the members of the Langley Kennel Club were appreciated and will long be remembered.
A celebration of George's life will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, May 6, 2010, at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home by the Rev. George T. Insley, followed by full military honors. Immediately following services will be a short gathering of friends and family at the funeral home. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Poquoson Rescue Squad, 830 Poquoson Ave., Poquoson, VA 23662, where George served as a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician for 10 years, would be greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Dr. Michael Joynes for his compassion and understanding during our time of need.

Please accept my deepest sympathy. My husband and I were traveling when George passed away and I only found out yesterday when I called Jim to see how he was feeling after his surgery. I know that George was a well loved man and he had the best of care from you, Jim and his other caregivers. May he rest in peace.

Dear Pat,
I will always have fond memories of George and all the work he did for Merrimac. The picnics you put on were always great. We also have George to thank for helping out so much with our training building.
You are in my thoughts.

Dear Pat,
I have the fondest memories of coming to Virginia in 1994 with my little girls and having you and George providing the warmest of welcomes. What a wonderful way to begin a new life in a new state! George's profound love of people and pets is a legacy you will see in all of the people who's lives he touched. What a honor to have known him. God has wonderful plans for him.
