George HUDGINS Obituary

HAMPTON - George Mason Hudgins Jr., 90, passed peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 04, 2010, leaving an empty place in the hearts of his family and friends, only to be filled with many precious memories.
Mason was a lifelong resident of the Peninsula. He was born in Newport News on Jan. 2, 1920, son of George Mason Hudgins Sr. and Lottye Hunt Hudgins. Most of his adult life, he lived in the Olde Wythe section of Hampton. He was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Newport News and a 50 year member of Masonic Lodge # 241. He retired from the 053 Department, in 1985, from Tenneco.
In addition to his parents, Mason was preceded in death by a baby sister, Jeannette; and a very special sister, Nancy Hudgins Ball.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Ann Williams Hudgins; two nephews, Thomas H. Ball and Courtney W. Ball, both of Louisville, Ky.; and some very special cousins, nieces, nephews; and one special niece, Gail W. Neff.
Mason served in the Infantry and Air Force, during WWII, in the European Theater for five years. He died of complications from Multiple Myeloma after suffering with it since 2007. His lifestyle had changed drastically in 1995, when Macular Degeneration took his vision and he became legally blind. Those who knew him were always amazed at how he dealt with his condition so gracefully.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in Hampton, Va., by Pastor Sam McPhail. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to Trinity United Methodist Church, 228 29th Street, Newport News, VA 23607; or to EDMARK (Hospice for Children), 516 London St., Portsmouth, VA 23704. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Mason has been a good friend for many years. I have enjoyed countless hours of stories and humor while visiting and working with him. He has been truly a bright spot in my life that will surely be missed. Our prayers are with the family and especially Ann at this time.
