Hazel BRICKHOUSE Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Hazel M. Brickhouse, 97, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Oct. 2, 2010.
She has been reunited with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and her husband, Benjamin Lindsay Brickhouse. In Hazel's quiet way, she spoke volumes to all; family, friends and strangers. She was called by God to teach Sunday School for more than 85 years. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, and the Norview Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Hazel leaves to cherish her memories her son, William and his wife, Sylvia; granddaughters and their husbands, Debbie Rutter and Bobby, Lisa Presgraves and John; and grandson, Dennis Hancock; four great-grandchildren, Liz Barbrey, John Presgraves Jr., Courtney Presgraves, and Eric Rutter; great-great-granddaughter, Kyla Lawson; and many nieces and nephews all of which will miss her deeply.
She was preceded in death by her five brothers and sister.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010, at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held in the W.J. Smith & Son Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. with the Pastor Tom Everett officiating with an Order of the Eastern Star service immediately following. Burial next to her husband of more than 50 years, Benjamin L. Brickhouse, will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk, at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010.
Memorial donations may be made to CHKD, P.O. Box 2156, Norfolk, VA 23501, or to Immanuel Baptist Church, 69 Saunders Road, Newport News, VA 23601.
The family wishes to thank Sheryl, her adoring aide, Lex Russell, her 'mighty' sitter; Kenneth and Peggy Presgraves, and to Heather Johnson, for their care, and to Riverside Homehealth and Hospice Services.

It is impossible to say the impact Hazel had on our lives -- no way to explain the way you felt when you walked in the door to her home. I loved her so much and will miss her.

Billy, Sylvia and Family,

My deepest sympathy to all of you. Being one of the nieces, I am saddened by her loss as well. She had a wonderful life and we were blessed to have had her with us for so many years. She will be missed by those who knew and loved her. I remember the good times we had together, Billy, when our family got together with yours for visits when we were children. I loved her dearly. I wish I could be there with you. Please know I am with you in spirit and you all are in my thoughts and prayers.

Love to all,

There was no one in this world, with the exception of Hazel's sister, Evelyn who was my mother, that could make a person feel more welcome and comfortable. Her home was a place filled with wonderful smells and joy, but filled mostly with love. She was so wonderful to me and my siblings growing up. Her Christmas cookies are made every year by me and my sister. Her Christmas open house parties were so wonderful. I loved pulling the string on the musical bell that hung between the kitchen and dining room. I, and the other children at the party, would pull it so much the adults would tell us to stop. She was my aunt with the candy drawer. The one who has always held a very special place in my heart. She always will have that place. My most heart felt sympathies go out to her family and friends. The world is a better place for having had her in it.
