Henry Kashouty Obituary

HAMPTON - Judge Henry David Kashouty, retired, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 12, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Kecha Costas Kashouty; daughters Leslie Meher Savvas and husband, Theodore Sam Jr., and Michelle Mehera Erickson; son, Merwan Angelo Kashouty; granddaughters Nicole Michelle Gatchell and Angela Veronica Schneider and husband, David Aaron; great granddaughters Sidony Alexandra Gatchell, Giorgia Michelle Gatchell and Lexington Ellery Gatchell; brother Ernest Kashouty and wife, Paula; cousin Hesta Surgent and many nieces and nephews. Kashouty served in the Navy in the Pacific during World War II, where he was assigned to the Admiral's band as a trombonist. He later formed his own small band which enabled him to complete a formal education. Kashouty was a graduate of the College of William and Mary, 1949 and The Marshall Wythe School of Law, 1951. Henry began his law career in Richmond, Virginia where he met and married his wife Kecha. They moved to Hampton, Virginia in 1954, where he practiced law until 1969. During this time, he served as a substitute judge in the City of Hampton. In 1969, he was appointed as a full time judge to the General District Court of Hampton and served until his retirement in 1996. From 1996 through 2010 he continued as a substitute judge, at which time he fully retired. Judge Kashouty was an advocate of Judicial Independence and Separation of Powers; he was instrumental in the creation of community agencies to encourage the education, training and treatment of individuals in need of crisis intervention. These agencies are still in operation today. During his tenure as judge, he was appointed by Chief Justice Harry L. Carrico of the Supreme Court of Virginia to serve as chairman of the State Judicial Independence and Separation of Powers committee. He also served as President of the Association of District Court Judges from 1982-1986, and served on the advisory board of the Virginia Beach Symphony, now known as Symphonicity. Kashouty was a longtime follower of the life and teachings of Avatar Meher Baba particularly Meher Baba's Book "GOD SPEAKS". "God cannot be explained, He cannot be argued about, He cannot be theorized nor can He be discussed and understood. God can only be lived¿" Meher Baba. To the Kashouty Family, Please accept my most sincerest and deepest condolences in the passing of the Honorable Judge. His Honor was the very first Judicial official I stood before to offer testimony in a traffic case, I was only 15 years old and a Hampton Police Cadet, later a Hampton Police Officer and finally a Virginia State Trooper. I always found his Honor to render decisions regarding the Law with the utmost fairness. He was certainly an example to the Honorable Judicial System. As a Trooper he had remembered me as a child and never did I ever approach his bench did he fail to offer a "Good Morning Trooper" Our Lord has again a new Soul with Him in the High Kingdom of Peace where this Honorable Soul shall give example of an Angel that balanced the scales of Justice while here on Earth.
The Kashouty Family, take comfort and assurance, I have no doubt that this Honorable Man today and forever shall walk with the Master Himself in that Kingdom of the Most High in Glorious Honor and Peace for his Loyal deeds. ALL RISE..... Job well done your Honor, your court is adjourned. Godspeed

Henry Kashouty is a wonderful man. He had a great sense of humor and was very practical and simple man. He was very intelligent and was one of the few who was fortunate to have spent time with prominent personalities. Listening to Henry I always felt that he had extraordinary knowledge and was very spiritual. This is highly essential for every lawyer. Henry always talked his strong will and conviction to seek the truth, a great quality for his professional career. My family and I are very fortunate to see have met him many times, he invited us to visit him many times to his home in Hampton Roads, VA. God bless his family and may his memory remain eternal. God bless his soul. - Murali & Manjusha Kalavapudi
