Henry BURGER Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Henry Karl Burger, 78, died peacefully in his sleep on April 8, 2010, after a challenging battle with Alzheimer's.
A Williamsburg resident for 34 years, "Hank" was born in Torrington, Conn., in 1931. He graduated from Torrington High School in 1949 and continued his education at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, in Worcester, Mass. After graduating in 1953, Hank began his 23 year career as a United States Naval Officer in the Civil Engineer Corp. During his time in the Navy, Hank earned graduate degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., and Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, Calif. After retiring from the Navy, in 1977, with the rank of Commander, Hank worked as Director of Public Works for York County; Plant and Engineering Director for the Hampton General Hospital; and finished his civilian career in 1997, as the Director of Hotel Services at Colonial Williamsburg.
A loving husband, brother, father, uncle and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gail McSherry Burger; his sister, Marie Gagnon; his daughters and sons-in-law, Betsy and Ward Huntley, Pam and Michael Oates; his son and daughter in-law, Patrick and Sally Burger; his nieces and nephews, Elise Gagnon, Clifford Gagnon, David Buxton, Michael Buxton, Robin Buxton, Sarah Buxton Brolley; and eight grandchildren, Taylor, Riley, Sarah, Farrell, Bogan, Ben, Maxwell and Lucas; a loving caregiver, his faithful dog, Max; and a multitude of amazing friends!
A service to celebrate Hank's life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 19, at St. Bede Catholic Church on Richmond Road.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to The Hospice House of Williamsburg, 4445 Powhatan Parkway, Williamsburg, VA 32185. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Hank was always such a great man to talk to -- treated me as a co-worker of Gail's, not the young whippersnapper that I was at the time! My thoughts and love are with Gail.
