I was saddened to learn of Herman's passing, "Old Glory" as Michael Banks so affectionately called him. My sincere condolences to you and your family. I knew Herman from TASC, DPTMSEC, Ft Eustis and as a friend and fellow retiree. I found Herman to be honest, direct and generous in all his dealings. It seemed like he could build, fabricate or fix anything and he expected you to be able to do the same as well. Herman gave me the only lessons that I ever received in the art and craft of stick welding. He was a master with a welder. "It (the weld/bead) should look like a row of dimes laying on their side" he would instruct me. My reply was "I'm trying!". We worked on some fun projects together including cutting a fireplace mantle piece from a hurricane downed pre-civil war walnut tree. Herman appreciated that we were saving a piece of our local heritage. From Herman's perspective I think that he appreciated that I could do more that "just push a pen". He always encouraged and supported my blacksmithing efforts in any way that he could. I will miss "Old Glory". My thoughts and prayers are with you.

My husband and I met Herman on the first day of my Chemo--We became instant friends. He was my inspiration. He told me everything to expect from our adventure together. We shared many dinners, and telephone calls and tried to have our appointments together--We shared our love for the mountains-What a great loss.. We miss him so much--But I know we will meet again in heaven.

Diane and Family, I was saddened to hear about Herman. We spent many an hour talking about hunting, fishing and woodworking. Many was the time I would stop in if I saw him cutting lawns just to have a quick chat. We will be keeping you all in our prayers. May God be with you during this time of sorrow.

My deepest condolences to the Butcher family. I knew Herman well, working with him and the folks in the Exhibit/Devices Branch at Ft Eustis for some 25 years. He was definitely extremely happy for family and turning out three sons that became doctors . . . . that will only happen in his lifetime. And there are those little jokes that we played on each other that still linger in our minds . . . today as we think about him and as we always have, it fills us with laughter and makes life just a little more bliss. He surely will be missed by all who knew him well, especially the guys who worked closely with him, Danny, Thomas, Michael, Eugene and Tommy. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I was deeply saddened to hear about the death of Herman Jr (OLD GLORY with a eagle eye).I know how difficult this must be for you and your family. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Herman Jr was such a kind, gentle soul. He would do anything to help someone in need. I remember hunting turkey with him, he would always want to call the bird in for you to harvest. Sometimes I think he didn’t even load his gun. May God bless you and your family during this time.

Im not sure where to start. Herman JR meant alot to me. There were many times that he was always there for me. He helped me a night, with welding etc. I cannot express how much this world would be better off, if it were filled with men like him and Herman SR.(His dad)They were both hard workers never complaining, often working sun-up to sun-down. Herman Jr was a man"s man, never scared to get has hands dirty, and yet had a kind heart that loved the lord. Not something often found anymore in men. I know he is in heaven now! Knowing him right now, hes most likly cutting grass for the mansion God has waiting on him. I will miss him on earth, but I know how happy is now, and I will take comfort in that, as I hope his family will also.
