Homer Byrd Obituary

ELBERON - Homer Byrd Jr. went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010.
He was born to the late Homer and Mattie P. Byrd on March 31, 1944. He graduated from L. P. Jackson High School in Dendron and attended Norfolk State College. At the time of his demise, Homer was employed at the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry.
Homer was a member of St. Paul Holiness Church, a member of the Buffalo Boys Motorcycle Club, and he enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his beloved wife of 42 years, Audrey L. Byrd; a daughter, Aulinda Byrd; two sons, Major Brian Byrd (Stacey), Brenton Byrd (Chanique); one sister, Bernice B. Bailey; two brothers, Earnest Byrd, Edward Byrd (Ruth); six grandchildren, De'Shawn Newby, Anjanette, Bre'cha, Breyden, Adarian, and Alexander Byrd; and a host of other family members, friends and co-workers.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010, at St. Paul Holiness Church in Dendron, Va., by Elder Welton Blount. A wake will be held at the church on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. Interment will be at the St. Paul Cemetery.

Memories and Condolences
for Homer Byrd

Not sure what to say?

Buck and Brenda Langhorne

October 23, 2010

In Loving Memory of Homer Byrd Jr.
We, your Langhorne brothers and sisters, family and friends- the real deal
Have fractured hearts due to this immeasurable loss-one that we know only God can heal
We do know that He will bring us through this storm as He has always done before
For, we have, with you and Homer by our sides-made many visits to Jordan's chilly shores
I usually try to say something nice about the deceased and sometimes it is a bit of struggle to find
But not for Homer, a man who loved God, family, and all of mankind
If you knew Homer, you knew a man who was never seen without flashing a beautiful smile
You knew a man who would help anyone in need-if it took going the last mile
You knew a man who never met a stranger
Who would help you to the point of personal danger
The world has lost a light that shone brilliantly from the core of his heart
His laughter was heard frequently and he was generous to a fault
But you also knew that he was going to get the best deal when purchansing items or services, of course with a smile
That was just his signature style
We bid this temporaty farewell to a genuine ambassador of Christ, our Lord
With full knowledge that we be re-united- if we but obey God's Word and remain on one accord
There are many things we could say about Homer, but the most important is- he was born, he lived, he loved, he gave, and appeared to have enjoyed the ride
Whether by car or motorcycle- with Jesus by his side
Be strong Audrey, because the love you shared will trancend the test of death and the grave
And one day- by and by- you'll wake up in your new home and be greeted by a bright smile and a welcoming wave

May God watch over you during your time of grief. Mr. Byrd was a stranger to no one. His warm smile and friendly conversation was so heart warming. My children still talk about Mr. Byrd stopping by to visit on our regular commutes to Surry from Williamsburg. He has left a lasting mark on all who knew him. Take comfort in knowing just how special a person he was to so many.

To the family: My heart was broken when I heard the news of Uncle Boosies' passing. Every time I come home to visit I would always see him, whether it was during a personal visit or a ride over the ferry. He always had a smile that would brighten up a dark room. I really wish I could be there for his homegoing celebration physically, but I will be there in spirit. I just want everyone to know that I love you and you are in my prayers. We want Homer (Uncle Boosie) here on earth with us, but God wanted him more. Although he will be TRULY missed, he is in a much better place and will forever be looking down smiling at us.

Homer, gone? Can't be. I worked with this man nearly three of my four years at the ferry (until 2002) and I can tell you he never said a bad word about ANYONE, he always had a kind greeting for EVERYONE, and was always an optimist. I'll miss him as much as everyone who knew him will. I know he's at peace now because my friend Homer was ALWAYS at peace with the rest of the world, he was always content and happy. Vaya Con Dios, brother Homer.

To Audrey: Sincere condolences to you and the entire Byrd Family. I will always remember Homer as a good and gentle person. My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of loss. God bless you all.

To Aunt Audrey and Fam: I am sorry for the loss of Uncle Homer! I remember as a kid, how he'd pinch my fat little face cheeks to the point of no submission! He was a terrific uncle with a persistent smile and I have never seen him upset or mad about anything. He was a peaceful and pleasant person to be around and will be missed. Those memories you have are not by chance. Use God, your family and those wonderful memories as as your strength and your guidance in your difficult times. His light will forever shine from above. To the Byrd family, may God Comfort you all. Isaiah 40:18-31
Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. God will keep you in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Him.(Isaiah 26:3) He will strengthen and sustain you.
