Janet Verrell Obituary
Born and raised in Newport News, she graduated from Newport News High School in 1961 and worked at the Daily Press as a proof reader in the early 60's where she met her husband of 46 years. Together they moved to Southern California for 40 years before returning to the Peninsula five years ago. She was an active member of Open Door Baptist Church. Mrs. Verrell loved her grandchildren, all animals and her home. She was a compassionate servant for others in need.
Mrs. Verrell was preceded in death by her parents, William and Eunice Spencer; and her brother, Donald Spencer.
She is survived by her husband, Gordon Verrell; her children, Terri Hall of Billings, Mont., and Jerry Verrell, of Newport News; her brother, William Spencer; and her 10 grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 27, 2009, at Peninsula Memorial Park by the Rev. David Ryerse.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Open Door Baptist Church, 14 Deep Creek Road, Newport News, VA 23606, or the SPCA.

Dear Uncle Gordon, Terri & Gerry,
It's hard to believe the ball of energy that was Aunt Janet is no longer. She was such a loving and generous woman, and I will miss her. She was the last to call me Susie, so I'll bury that nickname with her.
Steve, the kids and I will hold you all close in our prayers and wish we could be there to hold you close in our arms.

Oh what a pleasure it was to meet Janet and Gordon. Janet was so kind and she & Gordon made me feel comfortable in their home. I ascertained how talented Janet was as a painter and knowledgeable gardener.

Gordon and family,
We share your deep sorrow in the passing of Janet. She was truly a servant to others and we could see God's compassion in her even when she became ill. We shall miss her tremendously but rejoice in the fact that 'to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord' for those who are Christians.
