Jesse GERRINGER Obituary

HAMPTON - Jesse Earl Gerringer, age 83, died Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at his home where he longed to be after an extended hospitalization.
A native of Wakefield, Va., he had been a resident of Hampton since his early teens. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. Upon returning, he attended ODU and Elon College and was a graduate of NACA Apprentice School. He was employed at NASA until his retirement, after which he served as a magistrate for the City of Hampton for the next 11 years. After his second retirement, he enjoyed the camaraderie and fellowship of the Hampton Elks Lodge, where he spent many pleasurable days playing gin with his fellow retirees.
He was a gregarious and friendly man, who never met a stranger and always brought his particular brand of humor to any conversation. When he lived in the Powhatan Park area, he was active in the Briar Queen swimming pool organization and was affectionately known as 'Hot Dog' by all the neighborhood children and became the unofficial voice of the 'Tarpons.' He was also greatly interested in the City of Hampton and to that end, he penned many letters to the Editor of the Daily Press, voicing his concerns with city issues.
During the last 15 years, Earl faced many serious medical concerns. He was blessed to have many wonderful physicians caring for him, in particular, Dr. Brian McCormick and his nurse, Mary Gorman.
He was preceded in rest by his parents, the Rev. Carr E. Gerringer and Lacey Elkins; brothers, Raymond and wife, Pauline, Hugh, and Harper Gerringer.
Surviving members of his family include his wife, Nell Scoggin Gerringer; daughter, Gaye Gerringer McClung, and granddaughter, Julia Kathleen McClung, both of Charlotte, N.C.; grandson, Harper David McClung of Salem, Va.; brother, Carr and wife, Marie; sisters-in-law, Nita Gerringer and Ruth Gerringer; brothers-in-law, Lacy Scoggin, Lonnie Scoggin and wife, Dena, of Hampton, the Rev. Ernest Scoggin and wife, Francis of Martinsville, Va., Frank Culbreth and wife, Jenny of Dothan, Ala., and Jim and Sallie Shires of Forest, Va.; as well as a host of nieces and nephews. His grandchildren were the joy of his life, and he was enormously proud of them both. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 24, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. A celebration of Earl's life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 25, at Westhampton Baptist Church, 631 Aberdeen Road, Hampton, officiated by Dr. Danny Owens. There will be a private interment following the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 11835 Canon Blvd., Suite 102-A, Newport News, VA 23606 or the American Lung Association, 5349 E. Princess Anne Road, Norfolk, VA 23502.

It's impossible to put the full spirit of Uncle Earl into words. He was a kind man who always kept Sara, Andy, and me in the family loop. What a great man to share a birthday with. A person couldn't keep from smiling when talking to him. Sorry to have missed the memorial (...I was out of town.) Am sending ya'll a great big hug. Hope to see you soon. Love, Beth

Gaye,
So sorry to hear of your father's passing. The flood of memories from those Powhatan Park & BQ pool days are to many to name and some of my fondest. "Hot Dog" made our little corner of the world a better (and more fun) place to live. Your entire family will be in my prayers

"He was a gregarious and friendly man, who never met a stranger and always brought his particular brand of humor to any conversation". Nothing could describe Earl any better. It was interesting to me that he was equally the same friend to me as he was to my dad. Early years Nell and Earl helped me with extending my water skiing skills, my first deep water start was behind his boat, on Diascund Creek near Charlie Suttle's house. Years later at NASA we had many great times. One particular occasion occurred when I was in the apprentice school. I took annual leave and skipped his class. ( Earl's particular brand of humor) He sent me a hand written note in a government mailing envelope, identifing where I went (water skiing) and who I went with. He said " hope you had a good time." I and anyone else could write and tell stories about our experiences with Earl forever. Just a note, Harper made my first set of water skis.

Dear Nell, Gayenell, and All Who Loved Earl,

I was sorry to hear of Earl's passing and know he will be greatly missed by so many people whose lives he touched. I wish I could be there today; however, we're on a mission trip to Marion, VA and won't return until Sunday. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

The obituary was so beautifully written, I'm assuming by you Nell; you always were such a good writer and the picture was just sooo Earl--that infectious smile revealed his delightful personality and the fun-loving person he always was.

I remember so many good times together--picnics and swimming at that lake in Portsmouth, swim team meets and socials at BQ pool, Christmas Eve until late in the night at your home, dances at Ft. Monroe, and all the times the family shared as it grew and grew. Earl's sense of humor definitely added to the fun.

I always appreciated his willingness to express his views in letters to the editor. He was so often right on target on taking someone or some issue to task and he said it straightforwardly and eloquently, which was definitely a gift.

Although I know he had many health problems in recent years, they didn't seem to keep him down. It was so good to see him last summer and know that he could enjoy time with family. He really loved life and his family so very much.

I pray God's blessing on you at this time of grief and comfort for the days to come. Ron also adds his prayer for your family as well.

Love in Christ,

Sylvia

Gaye,
So sorry to hear about your dad. I know how hard it can be to loose your father, but especially for your daughter and son. All those years of experience and stories that he could have continued to share with them. My thoughts are with you and your family. I am on my way to Florida with my family or I would be there. Anything I can do for you just let me know (still in virginia beach). Remember the theme song "WE ARE FAMILY"....we are! Of course there are probably some stories that it is better not passed on by "Hot Dog". He will also be remembered.
