Joan McCORMICK Obituary

YORKTOWN - Joan 'Jinx' McCormick died Oct. 11, 2010, in her home after a prolonged dance with Alzheimer's.
Joan was born in Syracuse, N.Y., on Dec. 29, 1930. Her life journeys began with traveling as an Army Air Corp. dependent with her parents, Col. Charles and Ursala Moody. She lived and went to school in post war Europe.
She received her B.S. in dietetics from St. Joseph's of Emmitsburg, Md. While working as a dietician in Texas, she met her lifelong partner, Jim McCormick.
Joan was married to Jim for 54 years. Their life together included 23 years with the Air Force where they traveled throughout the world. Their love affair and their travels never stopped.
She was the mother to four sons, Kevin, Sean (deceased), Brendan (and wife, Julie), Brian (and wife, Judi); and her daughter, Cathy (and husband, Josh Lachine). She has nine grandchildren, Brendan and Meaghan McCormick, Sean, Quinlin and Aidan McCormick, Connor, Kate, Jamie, and Ryan Lachine.
Joan started her career as a dietician but after she discovered butter she moved over to the world of gourmet cooking. Besides cooking for her family and friends she also started the article Culinary Capers and became a Food Columnist for the Virginian Pilot and the York Town Crier. This was followed by her two volume cookbook, 'Take One Egg and Crack Up'. Her cooking career was rounded out by a regular show on local cable television.
Joan was also noted for her passion for tole painting. She displayed her art at On the Hill in Yorktown and many craft shows.
She was an active member at both Immaculate Conception Church and St. Joan of Arc (see she is still traveling).
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010, at Immaculate Conception Church by Msgr. Robert Perkins.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at ALZ.org. Also please join the family for the Peninsula Alzheimer's Memory Walk 2010 at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at Port Warwick. Registration begins at 9 a.m. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

I was just thinking of Joan a couple of days ago when I made her delicious brownies (that just last 5 minutes, as she said!) from one of her "take one egg and crack up" cook books. It brought back a lot of memories with her while I was baking and eating these. Nice to have this guest book to come up again at this time. Thoughts to her family.

Jim and Family,
I am so sorry to hear of Joan's passing. As many others have said, we hold many dear memories of her during her Crier days. I have thought of her often through the years, especially when I pull out one of her well-worn cookbooks to make another of our family favorites that originated from these. I have fond memories of eating with you, of parties at the Crier, of holiday get-togethers with the staff. I remember her sense of humor and especially her radiant smile. My mother just died in August of Alzheimer's and I know what a long painful journey that can be. My heart goes out to you and your family. But, just keep those precious memories close and know that there are thousands of people out here who remember Joan and her good works.

I met Joan and Jim 40 years ago when we worked at Langley and then became one of Jim's patients when he retired. Joan was one of those special people that you never forget. Her quick wit and sense of humor made her so much fun to be around. You could tell how much she loved her family by the stories in her cookbooks. My thoughts and prayers go out to Jim and all the family.

Dear Dr. McCormick and family was so sorry to hear of Joan's passing she was such a dear lady and always full of cheer and laughter. I know she will be missed by so many loved ones. I always loved to put my feet under her table. As I worked with Dr. Mc for several years I got to know Joan very well we enjoyed visiting very much. I always looked forward to her coming into the office with her smiling face and maybe a joke. What a lovely couple they made. May God be with you and bless you in this time of sorry. Dear Jimmy and family: I am so sorry to hear of Joan's passing. It was always such a joy to see you and Joan come into the pool at the Wellness Ctr. We thought so much of her and you. We have all commented on what good care you took of her even after you no longer came into the pool but sat on the sidelines watching over her. She was a lovely lady and the love you two shared was more than evident. I know you will be together again.

I am so sad to hear the passing of Mrs. McCormick. I had the pleasure of experiencing the wonderful spread she would prepare after we would go caroling back in our high school and college days. These are some of my favorite memories. She made those day seem like a modern day dickens novel. My thougts and prayers go out to Mr. McCormick, all her boys, Cathy and their spouses.
