John Scruggs Obituary
Johnny graduated from Ferguson High School in 1970, and continued his education, graduating from Newport News Shipyard Apprentice School in 1978. He worked as an Engineering Designer in the Shipyard for over 25 years.
Johnny was preceded in death by his loving parents, John C. Scruggs Jr. and Marian L. Scruggs.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 31 years, Elizabeth Roy Scruggs; and his loving sons and best friends, John C. Scruggs IV (Jay), and James Roy Scruggs. Johnny will be sorely missed by not only his family, but also his faithful dog and daily companion, Mako.
Johnny's family meant the world to him. He adored his boys and the love of his life, Beth. As an avid outdoorsman and lover of nature, Johnny was a member and past president of Pinewood Hunt Club. He enjoyed boating and spending time with family and friends at Lake Gaston, where many happy memories were made.
Johnny is also survived by his uncle, John G. Lochstampfor; and aunts, Mildred Lochstampfor and Virginia Scruggs; as well as many cousins. Additionally, he is survived by his father and mother-in-law, Valley and Jane Roy; sister-in-law, Pam Soddu and husband, Ton;, brother-in-law, Dr. Carl P. Roy; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive family and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at Peninsula Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at Northside Christian Church, with burial to follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, and honoring his namesake, contributions may be made to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, P.O. Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202.

Beth I don't know where I have been the last two weeks, but I just found out today about Johnny. I am stunned! I want you, Jay and James to know I am thinking and praying for all of you and I hope to see you soon. So very sorry I was not there to pay my respect to Johnny, he was a great guy!

Johnny and I grew up together. He was my next door neighbor in Newport News, as well as my high school best friend. As kids, Johnny and I and another cohort Bob Wyatt, would roam the "wilderness" of Bayberry Drive in the early sixties and hunt squirrels and rabbits with our pellet guns.
As we matured we went to Ferguson High. We graduated in 1970 and after that we both attended Chowan College.
I moved to New York in the early seventies and I lost track of Johnny, but I do remember a long time ago coming home for Christmas and meeting Johnny and his two boys. He still had that boyish glow and enduring laugh that captured the hearts and minds of all who loved him. I am sure he still has them today.

Johnny and I went through the Apprentice School together. He was a valued friend and a very honorable person. When I think back on those days, I always see Johnny with a smile upon his face. He will truly be missed.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Johnny was a friend of my dad's for over 30 years. I looked forward to the first day of dove hunting season as a kid because I knew he (and sometimes the boys) would come to Zuni to hunt. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I was so sorry to hear of your great loss. I cannot image the grief and sorrow that you must bear. But I know that you are not alone at this time of darkness. Beth-As you know, John and I met in unusual, and yet, very wonderful circumstances. He will always hold a very special place in my heart. He was one of the most humble people I have ever known. I know his love for you and the boys is what kept him going much of the time. John grew up next to my grandparents in Bayberry. He was a few years older than me. I remember when I was about six throwing a tennis ball against the side of his family's house(playing catch with myself)and John, after about 10 minutes of that, looking out the window and shaking his finger at me.I stopped immediately and ran inside to my granparents house cuz he was a teenager! I'm laughing as I write this cuz I got to know John many years later as an adult and trully he was such a kind, sweet, gentle man with so much grace and wisdom, just a wonderful wonderful and inspiring man.
