John SEINER Obituary

SMITHFIELD - Dr. John M. 'Jack' Seiner, 66, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010, in Oxford, Miss.
He had been serving as the Director of the Jamie L. Whitten National Center for Physical Acoustics (NCPA) at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Miss. He was a native of Philadelphia, Pa., and was a resident of Virginia since 1974.
Jack received a Doctor of Philosophy in Aerospace Engineering from Penn State in 1974. He began his career in jet noise research at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton in 1974, joining the Noise Control Branch as a Research Engineer. By 1982 he had become the leader of the Jet Noise Team of the Aeroacoustics Branch. While at NASA he conducted research that would earn him the respect of his fellow researchers and accolades of international scope.
After retiring from NASA in 1998, Jack moved to Oxford, Miss., to join the NCPA as Associate Director of Applied Research. His Aeroacoustics group became involved in a variety of exciting research projects sponsored by the United States Army, Navy, and Air Force. In 2009 Jack was appointed as Director of the NCPA. He loved experimental research and secured funding, designed, and built a unique and productive jet noise facility and wind tunnel system at the NCPA. He provided his coworkers with an environment for learning and growth, never trying to constrain their opportunities but encouraging them to expand their boundaries.
While he was passionate about his work, he was equally devoted to his wife, children and grandchildren. He traveled extensively for speaking engagements and always allowed time to enjoy the local cultures. He was an avid boater and enjoyed spending time on the water with his family and friends.
Jack is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mary Lois Seiner; daughters, Pamela Hart (Jason), Karena Seiner and Sandra Crouse (Matt); son, John M. Seiner Jr. (Jo); six grandchildren; brother, George Seiner (Faye); and sister, Marie Fleming (Bob); and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A celebration of Jack's life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.

With extremely deep sorrow and a heavy heart, I came to know today that my beloved professor and mentor guide Dr. Seiner is no more.He was to me not only a great educator but more importantly one of the greatest human beings I have worked with,an individual who I can reach out to always for every kinds of advice.
I still remember the day when he first started working in NCPA. I had the privilage and the honor to take his first class with him.The course was called "Aeroacoustics". During the class, I was amazed by the amount of knowledge that he possessed but what struck me most was his modesty. He was very easy going and a down to earth person.
Remember the day when he offered me the Research Assistantship and I also remember how important that scholarship meant to me during that time both with regards to my financial stability to finish my MS degree.

Personally I have gone through some difficult times at Olemiss and everytime I have reached out to him he has always helped me in coming out of those tough situations telling me not to give up.
He used to tell me "In America, everybody gets a chance". I still remember that sentence.

After I left Olemiss in 2002, I lost touch of him but was keeping his news via the NCPA website. I was so happy when he became the director of NCPA.
When I now look back all the memories of working with him is coming back.

I will miss you Dr.Seiner and I will miss your smile.May your soul rest in peace.

I met Jack a few years ago when I needed to take some supersonic test tunnel measurements. Normally academic equipment is pretty "hokey" and held together with spit, gum, and duct tape, but when I arrived at Ole Miss, I found a sight to behold. He and Bernie Jansen had constructed this incredible supersonic wind tunnel facility. It takes a very special kind of person to create something of this class and magnitude...and to make it feel like home. His work and his legacy are an inspiration to me.

I always enjoyed Jack’s company during the too few times I was able to visit with him. Jack was a patient, yet persuasive man, and a well respected mentor, teacher and fluid-dynamicist. He will be missed and well remembered.

November 6, 2010

I knew Jack and his family from the early days in Robanna Shores, as a colleague at NASA, and as a friend and part of the FAHS gang. He always did it right. One example I remember: he brought home a laser to align a ditch he was digging by hand, with a shovel, in his yard. He was truly a multi-talented guy. He will be missed in so may ways. All the best to Lois and family.

I had the good fortune of sharing an office with Dr. Seiner when he first came to NASA in 1974, and working with him daily for the next twenty four years until he retired from NASA and joined NCPA at Ole Miss. My wife and I had become dear friends with Dr. Seiner's family.

Dr. Seiner was one of the most talented and creative jet noise researcher in his generation. He was also a most meticulous experimentalist who could measure things others would not find. His enthusiasm for science had influence many of his colleagues, research associates, and students. Less known but equally important in Dr. Seiner's career: he was a phenomenal builder of world class jet noise facilities. He helped to build his own noise laboratory at Penn State while a doctoral student, a fantastic anechoic jet laboratory and acoustic wind tunnel at NASA Langley, and new facilities at NCPA.

Dr. Seiner will be missed by all his friends. It is comforting for us to know that his scientific legacy will live on.

Dr. John M. (Jack) Seiner was my mentor, professional advisor and a good friend. I was introduced to Dr. Seiner in 1998 by Prof. Hank Bass, the previous Director of the National Center for Physical Acoustics (NCPA) at Ole Miss. At the time I was an Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department and Dr. Seiner had just been hired by NCPA. Having conducted flow-control experiments in the large blue subsonic wind-tunnel at NCPA, Dr. Seiner and I quickly developed an understanding that went beyond words. I realized I had found a supportive senior colleague who really appreciated quality work. During my tenure in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Ole Miss, he helped me and my students on many occasions.

In spite of his busy schedule and multiple responsibilities, Dr. Seiner remained extremely approachable to students, researchers or anybody contemplating research in fields he found interesting. His interests were broad and he never dismissed ideas from anybody, even if they appeared outlandish.

After resigning from Ole Miss in 2007 to run my company, I have had very little contact with my former colleagues – except for Dr. Seiner. I always enjoyed the open scientific and technical discussions with him and valued his opinions, his no nonsense style and his hands on approach towards research. Most importantly, he always encouraged my work even though it was now being done at my company.

Last year (2009) he went out of his way to verify that wind noise actually reduces at speech frequencies when my patented “Deturbulator strips were attached on a NCPA operated Dodge minivan. Dr. Seiner drove the minivan himself, while Dr. Jim Chambers, Bernie Jansen and David Heffingtom rode in the van gathering data from microphones and accelerometers. What makes this even more relevant is that Dr. Seiner had already been appointed the Director of NCPA at that time and had important meetings scheduled all day!

About a month ago I had lunch with Dr. Seiner. This was the first time he did not look his usual jovial self. At the time I attributed it to University politics, since I know how devastating it can be for people who really enjoy hands-on scientific and technical work. I called him about two weeks ago. He was out of town then and asked me to meet him at his office upon his return to Oxford. I got caught up in work and the meeting never took place. I will miss him and pray that his soul rest in peace.

Dear Karena

I was saddened by the news that your father recently passed away. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time. I didn't know our fathers had something in common with jet noise. Your father did research and mine created jet noise each time he went up to fly. Both have gone to a better place ...

With heartfelt condolences/Noelle

We learned of Jack's passing this evening. Jack loved taking risks in the pursuit of excellence and knowledge. He took me under his wing and showed me what it meant to be a pioneer in science. I learned much from him. May God give him peace. May God give those who survive him solace.

Jack left an indelible mark on my life by being an exemplar of excellence, determination, and dedication in all that he did. He was my friend, colleague, and mentor, and I will continue to repay the lessons he provided me by being the best I can be in all that I choose to do. As I knew Jack better than most, I know that my determination would be all that he would ever want of me.
