John WORNOM Obituary

SEVERNA PARK, MD. - John Smith Wornom, dearest husband and father, passed away peacefully due to complications of old age on Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, in the home of his son, John Franklin Wornom, who had faithfully cared for him the last days of his life.
John was born Nov. 4, 1913, in Dare, Va., son of Charles Benton Wornom, Mary Elizabeth Smith, and Stepmother, Annie Moore. John married Sarah Lillian Martin Oct. 28, 1932. John and Lillian had a poultry business in Dare, Va., and then John owned and managed the Wornom General Store for seven years. During this time, John was heavily involved with the Boy Scouts and loved working with the boys. Following a one year project with Kellog Construction in Toledo, Ohio, he then worked for Kennecott Copper Refinery in Maryland until he retired. John and Lillian were avid square dancers for more than 30 years and loved traveling. After Lillian passed away, John continued to dance all over the world; twice on the wall of China. He loved traveling the world to places including Europe, Hawaii, Alaska, Japan, New Zealand and Australia. He traveled the country in his motor home and enjoyed attending church everywhere he went. He was a man of great faith, loved photography and fixing things. He was well known for his positive attitude and his love for his family.
John is survived by his sons, John Franklin and wife, Nancy of Severna Park, Md.; Paul Benton and his wife, Carol of Pasadena, Md.; and his daughter, Jane Elizabeth and her husband, Tim of Waverly, Iowa; and his sister, Rose Wescott of Yorktown, Va. He was loved by his 16 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Lillian; and his son, Eugene.
John was a dedicated husband to Lillian, father to his children, and to his faith in God.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, at Amory Funeral Home, Grafton. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at the funeral home. Dear Franklin, Paul and Jane,
I was saddened to hear about the death of your father from my Wormom cousins on the Peninsula. I did not get to know him until 1999 when he attended a Powell family reunion at Providence Church (my grandmother, Cossie Wornom, was a Powell). On that occasion we got a good photo of him with my father who was his first cousin. Then in 2002 he added a lot of life to the Wornom reunion at Providence Church.
I wish I could meet you and be with you at his burial, but we live in Richmond and have plans here for Saturday. I'll make a note of his death date in my Wornom family files, for in the near future I may print a few more copies of the Wornom family history. Sorry about thge loss of John. I'm Betty Mitchell Ball, the daughter of Louise and Macklin Mitchell of Dare. Sorry we can not be there to see you all and attend the funeral. But my husband and I are both retired and are traveling the country in our motor home like John did. We returned from spending the summer in Alaska and are presently in Casa Grande, AZ. Being a member of one of the few black families living on Church Street in Yorktown, I remember Mr. & Mrs. Wornom. They both were a friendly and kind couple. Their store was stocked with merchandise not found in other stores, and Mr. Wornom as well as his helper Linwood were eager to please each customer who came through the door. Mr. Wornom's business was a Water Street icon, one to be remembered in the history of Yorktown. I extend my heartfelt sympathy to each member of the family and pray your memories will sustain you as you grieve the loss of one so dear.

Franklin, Paul & Jane,

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I understand now the loss of a parent. Uncle John was a good man. You can be proud of your heritage and the legacy he left behind.
