Johnston BRENDEL Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Johnston 'Jack' Brendel died on April 24, 2010, from cancer, surrounded by his family at home.
Jack was born in Canton, Ohio, in 1936 to Catherine Louise McVicar and Lloyd Johnston Brendel. His school years were spent in Tarentum, Pa., where he played numerous high school sports and was senior class president. He graduated from the College of William and Mary and The Marshall Wythe School of Law. From 1959-1962, he served in the U.S. Navy as a radar control officer.
Jack's law career spanned 30 years in the Williamsburg community, where he was active as a volunteer with the local school system, the Kiwanis Club, The Salvation Army Board, the Architectural Review Board, CDR Board, Social Services Board, This Century Gallery and Bruton Parish Church, where he served on the Vestry and taught Sunday School.
Jack loved sailing, gardening and white water rafting. His unflagging loyalty to the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers was legendary. At their farmhouse in Mathews, he and Mary Ann have raised oysters for many years. Friends will remember his sense of humor, his competitive spirit and his ready availability to help in a crisis. Jack's credo for life was to leave his community enriched by his contributions.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Breese Brendel; his son, Johnston McVicar Brendel; his daughter, Jennifer Brendel Alston and her husband, Gary; and three grandchildren, Rebecca, Joshua and Grace Alston.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice House in Williamsburg at 4445 Powhatan Parkway (23188) or to the Heritage Humane Society 430 Waller Mill Rd. (23185)
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Bruton Parish Church on Friday, April 30, at 11 a.m. with burial in the churchyard. Friends are invited to join the family at a reception at Lewis Hall, Bruton Parish House, following the service. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Mary Ann, John and Jennifer,
Jack will be mourned and missed by hundreds I'm sad to think his grandkids aren't yet old enough to have the full measure of their grandfather.

MaryAnn & Jennifer:
I'm so sorry to hear of your loss.
I only knew Jack through the stories ya'll shared, but clearly he was a great man who will be missed by not only all of your family, but by the people he contributed to in his community. I'll pray for peace and comfort for your family.
