Joseph MORAN Obituary

HAMPTON - Joseph Francis Moran (USAF Ret), 78, died on Dec. 28, 2009 at his home surrounded by family.
He was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and had been a Peninsula resident since 1974. LT Colonel Moran was a graduate of Wilkes College in Pennsylvania prior to being accepted into the Air Force Cadet program. Upon completion of flight training, he was assigned to the 4th Fighter Interceptor Wing (Korea). His other operational assignments included several deployments as an Aircraft Commander with the Strategic Air Command and the Vietnam operation. Staff positions included two assignments to the Air Staff, USAF Headquarters (Pentagon) and the HQ Tactical Air Command. He was Director of Computer Operations, HQ Tactical Air Command at Langley AFB, until his retirement in February 1980. LTC Moran was a graduate of the Air Command Staff College, the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, the MBA program of George Washington University, and the Graduate Certification for Technology Management, American University. After his retirement, he held several positions in the information technology field with the Medical College of Virginia, the Norfolk School Board and as an Adjunct Professor with the Information Systems Graduate School, Golden Gate University.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nancy; sons, Sean (Andrea), and Kevin (fiancEe, Donna); and daughters, Colleen, Erin, and Susan. Also surviving are his sisters, Mary Boyle (Phil), Orlando, Fla., and Catherine Smedley (Bill), Kingston, Pa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Anna Kennedy Moran, Kingston, Pa.; his brother, Thomas, Laflin, Pa.; and his beloved daughter, Patricia.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with interment to follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home.

Shirley and I have not only lost a brother-in-law, but also a friend. We will miss him forever. The only good thing in all of this is that he has left a wonderful family, whose love we honour and cherish.
