Joseph Brown Obituary

BENA - Joseph Larry Brown Jr., 62, died Nov. 4, 2009, at his home with his beloved family at his side.
Larry Jr. was born Nov. 30, 1946, to the late Joseph Larry and Alice Shackelford Brown of Severn. Larry Jr. attended Achilles Elementary School and graduated from Gloucester High School in 1965. After graduating from high school Larry Jr. went to work in the well drilling business against his dad's wishes, but Larry Jr. would hear of no other career. The well company Larry Jr. grew up in was founded in the 1870's and his dad, Larry Sr. bought the company in the mid 1930's. In 1967 Larry Jr. took over the company from his dad, forming Brown's Well Drilling Co., Inc. At the time of his death he was President of the family owned company with most of his family involved in the business with him. He was a member of Union Baptist Church.
He was hardworking, respectful and thoughtful. He lived life each day in celebration of the joy and love he had for his wife, children and grandchildren. His family was special, he loved them and gave them anchorage, perspective and direction. He will be missed by everyone.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Betty Rowe Brown; children, Laurie Brown Flippin and husband, Billy, Joseph Larry Brown III and wife, Kristle, Maggie Brown Nuttall and husband, Jason; grandchildren, Kyle Flippin, Larry Brown IV, Tori Brown, Cole Flippin, Madilyn Nuttall and Tanner Nuttall; sister, Rose Marie B. Horsley and husband, Clem; niece, Shelly Haywood and husband, Lee; nephews, Scott Horsley and wife, Angie, and Keith Horsley; great-niece and great-nephew, Chase and Hannah Horsley.
Graveside funeral services officiated by the Rev. Bill West, the Rev. Patrick Coffey and the Rev. Richard Whiteheart, will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
In memory of Larry Jr. contributions may be sent to: Union Baptist Church, 9254 Guinea Road, Hayes, VA 23072 or Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 9, Bena, VA 23018. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Betty and Family,

Doesn't seem that long ago we talked down Tommy's and Joanne's. Life is so short. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Larry was a nice person and so "down to earth". He will be missed.

My heart goes out to you and your family in this time of grief. I could always expect a smiling face from Larry no matter what kind of day it was or what we messed up on the job. I moved out of state years ago but often came to see my children and Larry was one of the first I'd go and visit. I will surely miss the red dodge parked out at Buck Rowe's store. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers. We will all surely miss him. God Bless
