Lawrence BRITT Obituary
He was born in Halifax, N.C., and moved to Newport News after graduating from John A. Chaloner High School in 1964.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Horace and Celia Britt, seven brothers, Gladys, James, William, Horace Jr., Nathaniel, Clarence, and Earnest Britt; and one sister, Mildred Ivey.
Lawrence loved the Lord and worked diligently as treasurer/ trustee at St. Timothy C.O.C.H, USA, and later served as a trustee from 2002-2009 at First Baptist Church Denbigh. He was a former Newport News Shipbuilding employee and an Estes Express truck driver.
Bear was known for his delicious home cooking; BBQ, fried fish, and hushpuppies. Even though facing many years of health challenges, he had a tremendous entrepreneurship spirit. He produced beautiful crops from his garden, and pressed his way to continue to serve in his church community and communities-at-large from his trailer loads of collard greens, sweet potatoes, and corn-on-the-cob during the holiday seasons.
Lawrence leaves behind a wife of 27 years, Janet; three children, Lemont of Hampton, Lawrence "LA," and Kimberly of Newport News; four grandchildren, Sterling, Jaylen, Zyian, and Shaylin; four brothers, Forest (Hazel) of Newport News, John (Janet) of Suffolk, Leon of Hampton, and Edward (Sarah) of Gaston, N.C.; two sisters, Shirley Johnson of Hampton, and Pattie Pritchett of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; three sisters-in-law, Lavern Britt of Hampton, Maryland Britt, and Dr. Saundra Cherry of Newport News; three brother-in-laws, Frank Nelson (VeElla) of Newport News, Jeffery Nelson (Tisha) of Hampton, and William Nelson Jr. (Kim) of Richmond; father-in-law, William A. Nelson Sr.(Linda) of Newport News; one aunt Rosa Moody Lewis of Gaston, N.C.; one aunt-in-law, Addie Threatt, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
Viewing will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Monday Aug. 16, 2010, at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1607-27th Street, Newport News, VA 23607, 757-380-0251, and also two hours prior to service at the church. A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010, at First Baptist Church Denbigh, 3628 Campbell Rd., Newport News, VA, with Pastor Ivan T. Harris, officiating. Condolences to the Britt Family: "Bear" was a very special person, his insights and compassion seemed sometimes to be out of place in the settings we experienced them. The motorcycle road trips, weekends at the race track, back yard cookouts and just the boy’s at the house, I now know that God was using him even then to change the lives of people. "Bear" enjoyed life and he loved people and cared about their happiness. I will never forget the way he touched my life in a big brother way. Heaven now rejoices as another Saint has come home. May God's peace comfort all during this time.

This is hard for me since I just lost my parents and now their best neighbor. My Daddy thought the world of him as well as myself. When I was having a bad day he always seemed to pick me up. I will not forget the "BBQ" and the veggies he shared. He will always have a warm spot in my heart. I just know He and my Daddy are talking about how they are going to plant their gardens now. I will bereave for him just like I am bereaving for my parents.

My deepest sympathy to the Britt family. I remember Mr. Britt as a customer of Dixie Gas Co. when I worked there, it was always a pleasure to wait on him & his family. You just knew that he was a good Christian man by his very manner & speech. I pray God will comfort & strengthen his family always.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend and brother, Lawrence Britt. We shall always remember the man we called "Bear". The friendship that he and my late father shared was special. I will definitely miss the fish frys! May God provide the Britt family with comfort and peace.
