Lawrence LEWIS Obituary

HAMPTON - On Jan. 4, 2011, Bishop Dr. Lawrence Lewis, Pastor/Founder of New Life Church in Hampton, Va., went home to be with the Lord.
Lawrence Lewis was born Dec. 23, 1926, in Raleigh, N.C., being the second of three children born to Irene Sanders Lewis and Plummer Lewis. Thereafter he relocated to Newport News, Va., with his former wife, Josephine, where he later obtained employment with the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company.
Pastor Lawrence Lewis was nationally recognized for his outstanding contribution to the community. As the founder of Operation Breaking Through, Pastor Lawrence Lewis became the recipient of the 522nd Points of Light Award from the former President, George W. Bush Sr. in a formal ceremony at the White House in 1993.
Bishop Lawrence Lewis leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Carolyn Lewis of Suffolk, Va.; son, Larry Lewis (Charlene) of Yorktown, Va.; daughters, Joanne Fleming of Hampton, Va., Eldrie Scott (Michael) and Joi Taylor, of Newport News, Va.; sister, Susie Ann Hunter of Raleigh, N.C.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and a host of family and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held at New Life Church at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7. The Homegoing Celebration will be held noon Saturday at New Life Church. Pastor Arthur Rogers will officiate. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

The LORD allowed me the priviledge of knowing Brother Lewis when we both worked in Newport News Shipbuilding. We spent many lunch hours together sharing the Word and fellowshipping. He was a good man who blessed my life.

January 13, 2011

We regret we were in New York City during the time of the Memorial Service for Pastor Lewis. We have known this gentle giant for many years. Because of our missionary service we connected with Pastor Lewis. He had opportunity to go to places in Africa that the tourists never saw. Walking up mountains in Burundi, sharing the Word in Uganda, are just a few of the challenging places in which he ministered. My prayer is although he is gone, someone else will step into his missionary shoes to carry on the legacy. We will deeply miss our friend, this missionary statesman, Rev. Lawrence Lewis. Rev. Wow. What a shock, although I knew he'd been ill. Gosh. I can recall vividly Lawrence and Josephine and family becoming my second family where I could hang out. Larry became my other brother, JoAnn and Eldrie my second sisters. I can also recall Mr. Lewis and family going on vacation and asking me to look after the house (on North Avenue) and Lassie, my buddy. Even after getting into a little trouble, Mr. Lewis was calm in his talk to help get us (me and my partners) back on the straight and narrow, after we got caught committing teenage pranks. And, I can recall going bowling with them, in leagues or for fun, broadening my horizons with educational fun. Rest in peace Mr. Lewis. Rest in peace.

To the Lewis Family:
I extend to you my heartfelt prayers and sympathy. Bishop Lewis was a man I highly respected and loved dearly. One of the things I will never forget was when right after God called me to preach and teach His Word, Bishop Lewis took time out to share how his ministry began and to plant precious seed into my life. Bishop Lewis was a man of compassion and truth, and I thank God for putting him in my life!

To Larry, Joanne, Eldrie, and the Lewis Family,
I met your father around 1968 as he acquired interest in Citizens Band Radio years before I learned that he was in the Ministry. The last conversation we had while walking on North Avenue was remembring the early times such as purchasing dynamite to remove tree stumps to clear the land, other neighbors getting involved with CB (pre-1972), KQK-0786 and how he and my father "Stingray" drew the artwork handle for "Dogfish" for his QSL in our garage, the 4-10 Citizens Band Club, and one time we all went out fishing Eldrie might have been with us -- we launched at the Boat Harbor.
So much we talked about, so much now that things have changed.

May the Lord allow the things you have done succeed ongoing.
KQK-0786 although 10-7 to us, IS 10-8 with Jesus.
KAKE-5134 (son of KQK-1731) clear and 10-10.
I do not use CB frequencies now, I suppose the Internet is more accessible.
God Bless you all,

Bishop was a General in Civilian attire for Christ. Truly, he led by example from the start of the Church to where it is today, he only wanted God to get the credit for everything because he knew God is the one that allow us to accomplish things on this side anyway. Bishop inspired so many to go on to become Ministers, Pastor, Elders, Lawyers, Nurses, Managers etc. He was a father figure to me and true friend. He never put himself above anyone. I thank God for allowing this Man of God to cross my path. Bishop, I salute you and will see you in Heaven my friend.

Carolyn & Family, (my friends) you know what the word says. To be absent from the body is to be in the presence of God. Bishop is there. We love you guys. Be encourage and stay strong.
