CSM Lonzell Stewart served his soldiers with devotion and commitment to a betterment of the Army. In Oct 73, then Trans School Commandant Col Orman Hicks spoke of then 1st SG Stewart, I "told the General I've never seen a company look as good as Company B, 1st Student Battalion."

I know that this condolence is years after CSM Stewart's passing, but I just made an internet search for him today as I was remembering him. I was one of the many inept soldiers that he guided through the infancy of our Army service. I was a 2LT whose first assignment was in a training company at Ft. Eustis where CSM (then 1SG) Stewart was serving as First Sergeant. I truly knew nothing and asked him a million questions. He always was gracious with his time and desire to develop young officers. At one point he scheduled me to attend the First Sergeant's course to learn more. In my career I never met another officer that had graduated from that course. In the course of 30 years of commissioned service, I never encountered a finer, wiser, or more compassionate NCO than CSM Stewart.
I became the officer I was as a direct result of his mentoring and personal care for me as a person. I can only pray that my time on earth is over, that CSM Stewart will find time to spend a little time catching up with an old friend and student.
After all of these years I am deeply saddened by his loss and I can only pass on my deepest sympathy to all of his family.

On behalf of everyone who has ever worn the chevrons of a sergeant major, we are deeply saddened and want to pass along our sincere condolences to the entire family. CSM Stewart shared the same passion for soldiering as his legendary peers who have come before him. He also shared the same desire to excel, becoming a command sergeant major. Throughout his life, he put service first, both to the nation and his community. Command Sergeant Major Stewart was a terrific soldier and perhaps more importantly a better person and a great mentor. He will be truly missed by the entire NCO Corps community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Be thou at Peace.

MOMMA,
I WANT YOU TO BE STRONG. I WANT YOU BE HAPPY. THIS MAN THAT YOU BROUGHT INTO MY LIFE WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED AS THE ONE WHO LOVED A BOY THAT WAS NOT HIS OWN. THAT GAVE A BOY A SAFE AND LOVING HOME TO COME TO THEN AS WELL AS NOW. A MAN THAT WOULD GIVE UP HIS LAST DOLLAR IN HIS WALLET IF I WANTED IT. A MAN THAT WAS A HERO IN MY EYES. I WILL ALWAYS LOVE HIM AND WILL BE PROUD TO CALL HIM DAD. HE GAVE ME THE STRENGHTH TO CONTINUE ON WHEN THINGS WERE TOUGH. HE GAVE ME INTESTINAL FORTITUTDE THAT MADE ME THE MAN THAT I AM TODAY. I LOVE YOU AND I WILL ALWAYS BE HERE FOR YOU. I WANT YOU TO KNOW IN CLOSING THAT I WILL ALWAYS KEEP HIM IN MY HEART. I LOVED HIM DEARLY.

Sis.Stewart,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Deacon Stewart was such a wonderful man of God's I feel honored to have known him. I wanted to share these words spoken by David. Prayerfully they will bring some encouragement to you and your family during this time.I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.
O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.
I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. May you find comfort in these verses knowing that God is forever with you.

Mama Shirley, my vocabulary is too limited to express love for Daddy Stewart. He was a kind, compassion, and gentle giant and will definitely be missed. He made himself available and extended a helping hand and an open heart to me (Daddy's Little Girl) and my husband, Charlie (now deaceased). It is because of his outpouring love that we were able endure a very difficult time in our lives. My heart aches but I know that God makes no mistakes. So, however I may assist you and your loved ones in your time of need, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don't hesitate to ask. I loved Daddy Stewart and I love you as well. I do know what you are going through and I am here for you.

I pray that God will bless the Stewart family during this time of bereavement. I was a soldier in the U.S.Army under CSM Stewart's leadership. I can truly say that his guidance for his subordinates was truly with care and concern. He was a great leader, not only as a soldier, yet as a God-fearing man, in which he often displayed in his role as a supervisor in the military. I had the privilege of meeting CSM Stewart when I first was assigned to the Transportation School Brigade at Fort Eustis Virginia. During his in-briefing with me to the brigade, I immediately saw a Christian at work, this was the way he talked and carried himself throughout the session. He was a truly inspired leader not only in the military, yet in his walks of life, after the military. I pray that Heaven will smile upon the Stewart family, and the extension of the Stewart family, I also pray that you will continue to "press toward the mark of God's calling; For we have to realize that we all belong to God, and He only loans each of us to each other for a "little while". Be blessed in the name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ....with "Christian Love"
