The crew (Daily Press and Times Herald newspaper carriers of North Newport News) remember him and family very well. He brought joy to the area. Every helpful, he was a father, coach, mentor and great teacher. The Smith, Tyler, Long, and Pair families, as well as the neighborhood remember very well.

Sorry to read about Mr. Smith's passing.
He always spoke as he walked by on Swann Avenue. Most of the time I knew he was an atheletic tennis player, yet now I have learned more about his other pursuits.
North Newport News is getting smaller with the passing of another friend.

It has been more than 30 years since I have talked to Mr. Smith but he is one of the reasons that I love the game of tennis today. He was always trying to teach my brother, Willie, and I the basics of the game while we were just trying to win against him. We never did win against him. I will miss him.

Aw man, I am at a loss for words. Although I'm far away, Mr. Smith was good for and to all who met him. I don't recall how I met him, I just know that it was good, for he not only helped my brother John and I (as well as James Ruffin, Rodney and Terry Tyler too) with our tennis games, he mentored, offering valuable life lessons. A great man, I'm sure he's missed terribly by all. My condolences to the family.

We are so sorry for your lost. My family have known you'll 40 years since we move to lyndon circle. Your dad would pick me and my two brothers up on Sunday mornings on his way to Sunday School. Vickie,
You have my heartfelt sympathy at the passing of your father. Your parents always inspired each of us to excel, and I really appreciated their concern. I will always remember his question of "What are you doing with yourself now?" He became a cornerstone for the community by actively involving himself in the activities of North Newport News. You have the comfort of knowing that he loved you very much and was very proud of you. You will be in my prayers.

Dear Smith Family,
I met Mr Smith 12 years ago when I starting doing taxes for H&R Block on Main Street. He was one of my first clients and I loved him from the start. He has brought his taxes to me every year since and I so looked forward to his visit each year. He was a wonderful, caring man and I know that he will be missed by so many. There was a special place in Heaven reserved for him and I'm sure he's having a great time bowling up there. I will miss him. God bless you all.

Vickie, I cannot begin to explain the sadness I felt when I learned of your Dad's passing. Your house was like a second home to me and your parents always made me feel welcome. You are in my prayers and I know you will find comfort in knowing that God has opened his arms to welcome your Dad in Heaven. "Lou"
