Mark MacDONALD Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Mark E. MacDonald M.D. died Aug. 9, 2010.
Born in 1952, he grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and dropped out of Ohio State to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1970-75. He retired from N.C. National Guard in 1996 after 20 years of service.
He attended NCSU on the GI Bill, where he met his former wife, Libby and graduated in 1980 with a Soil Conservation degree. In 1985, he entered medical school at ECU and began practice as a family physician in 1992. While in medical practice, he graduated from police academy and became a sworn police officer with the Auxiliary unit in Newport News, Va., later joining the Marine Patrol unit. He volunteered many nights with his partner Rich Bell and enjoyed the camaraderie of numerous dedicated male and female officers.
He had sparkling blue eyes to match his quick wit. He was a dedicated father to Ann and Erin, encouraging the development of their sense of adventure and fun through activities like donning bicycle helmets and life jackets to walk through the remnants of a storm.
Mark is survived by his daughters, Ann and Erin; his mother, Jackie; brother, Gary; aunt, Jean; and many, many family and friends who loved him.
The family would like Mark's friends to help them celebrate his life from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, at 312 Woodroof Rd. Newport News, Va. They would cherish your written memories of Mark.
Arrangements are by Weymouth Funeral Home View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

I am very sorry to find out that my friend passed away, I have known Mark for a very long time, and this friendship started in my first years of being a police officer. Mark loved people and he loved being around law enforcement. He was always so kind if he saw you. He would always stop, shake your hand and then talk to you. He was a one of a kind and showed his true concern to the public, patients and friends. My heart goes out to the family, and I pray that God will ease your sorrow at this time. A true family man and friend to all has departed us, but his memory will live on. Heaven has gained another saint, so my heart goes out to all of his family, God bless you all!

Whenever I was down, I could count on Mark to cheer me up with that contagious laugh. I sure could use that laugh now. He was my fellow medical student, physician, marathoner, big brother and will always be my eternal best buddy. Jimmy Griggs MD

Dear Libby, Ann & Erin,

A friend from NN called today and gave us the very sad news. We have been out of touch for awhile but always think about your family whenever we remember the 4 yrs. we lived across the street , you were all great neighbors.
One of my memories of Mark was watching him try to walk the day after running some crazy 100 mile race.
Like everyone else who wrote we are so sorry for your loss and our thoughts are with you.

(Libby - I tried e-mailing a couple of months ago but it bounced back, in the Fall I will try and give you a call)

Libby, Ann, Erin,
I am so sorry for your loss. Through your time of sorrow, only try and remember the good times you shared with him. Ann and Erin, when I saw you in the store, I never thought I would be writing this. Keep your head high and I know your dad was so proud of your accomplishments. When I worked with him, he had nothing but good and proud things to share about you. Remember his love for you. May God bless and keep you.
