Marvin Bloxom Obituary

POQUOSON - Marvin Buford "Buddy" Bloxom, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, left his earthly home and went to be with his Lord and Savior in Heaven on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2009, at The Golden Living Center in Poquoson, after a lengthy illness.
He was born Aug. 22, 1913, to Marvin P. and Mary Buford Bloxom in what was then Elizabeth City County. He was raised in Fox Hill, but became a Poquoson resident in 1941. He graduated from Hampton High School and attended the College of William and Mary on a baseball scholarship. He retired in 1978 from the Sheet Metal Dept. of Northrup Grumman Newport News Shipbuilding after 39 years of service.
Buddy was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church; a charter member of the Poquoson Lions Club; and recently celebrated 60 years with Poquoson Masonic Lodge #49, AF & AM. He played baseball for both Poquoson and Messick in the Tri-County League, where he once pitched a perfect game with Herman Forrest at Dr. White's field in Poquoson. He coached Post 273 American League baseball as well as youth baseball in Poquoson. Always a great lover of youth athletics, "Mr. Buddy", as he was know by the players and fans organized a youth baseball league. He was an avid bowler and golfer, and always had a wonderful garden.
Buddy was preceded in death by his parents; son, Harry L. "Skip" Bloxom; brother, Harry "Abie" Bloxom; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Elva Bloxom; sister and brother-in-law, Harriett and Stanley Morse; mother and father-in-law, Sue and Robert Crooks Lawson; sister-in-law, Rose Conner and husband, James; and brothers-in-law, Robert Turnbull and Joseph Ankeney.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Irella Lawson Bloxom; sons, Robert M. Bloxom and wife, Gail of Huntersville, N.C., and Gene W. Bloxom and wife, Priscille of Poquoson; a daughter, Betty Forrest and husband, Hugh of Poquoson; sisters, Hope Ankeney, Janie Turnbull, and Anne Knight and husband, Al; sister-in-law, Martha Lane Bloxom; grandchildren, Matthew Scott Bloxom and wife, Cindy, Richard Grayson Bloxom, Kelly Brown and husband, Thomas, Sheila Huff and husband, Mark, Dr. Ilene Stephan and husband, Chris, Rachel Harrell and husband, Bryan, Jeremy W. Bloxom and wife, Jennifer, Brian M. Bloxom and Sarah, and Ben Huffman and wife, Jennifer; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, and other times at the home. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church by the Rev. Rita A. Callis and the Rev. Carol Bookwalter. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton, with Masonic Rites.
