Mary Sherlock Obituary

AUSTIN, TEXAS - Mary Ann (West) Sherlock of Austin, Texas, passed away on Dec. 22, 2009 after a courageous 17-month battle with cholangiocarcinoma. She died peacefully with her husband, Craig, at her side.
She was born Nov. 3, 1968, in Portsmouth, Va., the daughter of Jack and San West. She graduated from Warwick High School in 1986, and Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va., in 1990. Prior to her cancer diagnosis, she enjoyed an accomplished career in sales with Ferguson Enterprises in Augusta, Ga., and in Houston, Texas, and Kiva Kitchen & Bath in Austin, Texas.
Among Mary Ann's varied interests were photography, dance, and camping, as well as spending time with her family. Prior to coming to Texas, she lived in Augusta, where she founded The Rachel Longstreet Foundation, a major contributor to the Jessye Norman School of The Arts to honor her first child, Virginia Stuart Trainor, who lived a short life of five years. She spearheaded the building of the first handicapped-accessible playground in Georgia, "Virginia's Playground" in Augusta.
Mary Ann was an active Rotary Club member, an award-winning salesperson, and recipient of the Young Alumna Achievement Award from Randolph-Macon College in 2005. She was a wonderful wife, mother and friend, brave and noble throughout her life, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her husband, Craig; and daughter, Annie of Austin, Texas; her parents, Jack and San West of The Woodlands, Texas; and her brother, Ned West and his wife, Jennifer and their daughters, Caroline and Violet of Black Hawk, Colo.; her grandfather, Capt. John H. Garrett Jr. of Richmond, Va.; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 3901 S. Panther Creek Dr., The Woodlands, TX 77381.
In lieu of flowers, donations to The Run for Annie fund, named for Annie Sherlock's future education would be appreciated. Information may be found at: http://therunforannie.blogspot.com/. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Where to start? I thought of Mary Ann today and tried to find her as we had not talked for several years, and I found myself missing her. I have been overwhelmed with disbelief and sadness to discover she has passed away. So much so, I dragged out some old pictures of me, Craig (in his "Phish" days), John, and Mary Ann back when we were all just friends. Mary Ann and I lived together in Richmond for 2-3 years. Wow. Mary Ann was talented, giving, amazingly intelligent, unconventional, and undoubtedly special in this world. Peace be with you.

MaryAnn was an amazing, strong woman, who I have looked up to from the moment I met her. She taught me so much in the short few years of our friendship, and I will always be grateful for having her in my life. I will truly miss my dear friend.

What do you say at a time like this? I have been so saddened by Mary Ann's passing, however I am so grateful to have known her. Although I too haven't seen her for several years, I considered her one of my dearest friends. She and I met while working at a little restaurant in Richmond, VA while we were in college. We shared so many good times together. We laughed until we cried and sometimes we cried until we laughed. She has been an inspiration to me and will be in my heart forever. My deepest sympathies are with your family.

With Great Sympathy,

My thoughts and prayers continue to be with your family. Mary Ann was an amazing woman whose life touched the hearts of people all over the country. I shall always remember summer camping trips on the Cowpasture River with a smile. May you continue to feel God's love and strength through the thoughts and prayers of so many who love you.

Mary Ann was an incredible woman, and she imparted many lessons to so many others. Her daughter Annie will always know what kind of woman her mother was. Mary Ann set the bar high, and will always be remembered and revered by those of us lucky enough to have known and loved her.

I was truly my pleasure to have met and worked with Mary Ann at Kiva Kitchen and Bath. You fought a long hard battle against what many would have thought insurmountable odds, but you, Mary Ann, persevered. Your legacy will live on.
