Mary HICKS Obituary

GRAFTON - Mary Hicks, 84, went home to be with the Lord on Jan. 6, 2010, after a short illness. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister.
Mary was the second of three children, born to Paul and Thelma Nunn, on Oct. 1, 1925, in Perry, Iowa. She grew up in the town of Clinton, Iowa, having graduated from Clinton High School in 1943. She graduated from St. Luke's Nursing School in Chicago in 1947. Following graduation from nursing training, Mary served at the Fort Defiance Arizona Navajo Hospital. After her time in Arizona, she visited her sister, Marge in Trieste, Italy, where she met her future husband, Gene. They were married in Trieste, in 1948, and Mary was then committed to the life of an Army officer's wife. She saw the world, moving 30 times, most often relocating the family, frequently on short notice. She was incredibly positive and always treated the moves as new, adventurous chapters in her family's book.
Mary and Gene enjoyed their retirement years in Grafton. She loved her family, friends, and neighbors. Mary was a regular member of the Fort Eustis Post Chapel, participated in the PWOC, the Retired Officer's Wives Club, and was a tireless supporter of the activities of the 82nd Airborne Association, Hampton Roads Chapter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Orman E. (Gene) Hicks; and her sister, Marge Bryhn.
Survivors include a daughter, Gail Riley and husband, Pat of Washington, N.C.; son, Tom Hicks and wife, Nancy of Haddonfield, N.J.; grandchildren, Brian, Lindsay and Andrew, also of Haddonfield. She is also survived by her brother, James Nunn and wife, Susan of Coupeville, Wash.
A celebration of Mary's life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, at the Fort Eustis Regimental Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary's name to the Alzheimer's Association, Southeastern Virginia Chapter, 6350 Center Drive, Suite 102, Norfolk, VA 23502.

To Gail and Tom, I send you my deepest sympathy. I so enjoyed seeing your mother over the years during tax time. She was a remarkable person and will be missed by all who knew her.

I met Col Hicks and Mary through my father CW4 Edward Brashears. My dad and mom spoke very highly of them and Mary was a very kind individual to my mom, Dottie Brashears (who has join my father in heaven in the past month). My heartfelt prayers go out to the family (I understand the loss of a dearly loved one). May God bring you comfort through this time of sorrow. Remember & cherish the shared memories. These memories will comfort you during this time of sorrow. May God bless you and your family.

Thelma and I were saddened to learn of the demise of Mary. She was a wounderful person and will be missed by all that knew her. May the family receive the blessing of God's comfort during this difficult time. The book John, chapter 11, verses 25 and 26 say: Jesus then said, "I am the one who raises the dead to life! Everyone who has faith in me will live, even if they die. And everyone who lives because of faith in me will never really die." And so it is with Mary.

I met Mary at Ft.Eustis in the fall of 1968. She was a truly remarkable person, always smiling and happy and involved in so many activities on the Post. She was gracious to everyone, regardless of rank or position. Her eyes sparkled when she greeted you and she made you feel that she was truly interested in you and what was going on in your life. After our husbands retired from the Army, I would sometimes see Mary at Food Lion and we would catch up on how life was treating us. Even when Gene was requiring a lot of her time and energy, she managed to smile and keep a positive attitude. She was so grateful for her good neighbors who helped make it possible for her to stay in her home. It is sad to know I will not be seeing her again.

Gail and Tom,
Libby and I send our deepest heartfelt sympathy at the loss of your mother. Mary was the outstanding and respected role model "Army Wife." We served together in Germany where Gene was Bill's Commander. Mary and I met Gene and Bill in Hawaii while they were stationed in Vietnam. They were sent to Hawaii for two weeks to help solve a problem concerning Army aircraft in Vietnam. The four of us had a wonderful time for those two weeks and we have carried memories of that time with our dear friends in our hearts.
Gene loved his landscaping and Libby once wrote Better Homes and Gardens hoping to get an article published about Gene and Mary's beautiful gardening designs.
And now, we are happy knowing that Mary and Gene are together again working on a beautiful heavenly garden.
With much love, Bill & Libby
