I remember Maxine as a great lady, always so effusive and kind when you met her. My son cut grass for her and Joe when he was in high school and that's how I got to know her.
She will be missed in our community.

Friend and Neighbor,

July 16, 2010

You Dear Girl Maxine,

You had a good run this side
Of the Divide.

In the 99th year
We shed a tear.

And silently grieve
As we take our leave

From a First Lady of Mathews.

Maxine had true grit. Not many have lived a life so long so full. She respected and appreciated the mighty, middle, and little people. Her passions were holly (holy!) trees, flowers, bridge, Red Hatters, history, volunteering with community groups, and memories of her beloved Joe.

She judged at flower shows, and won
more individual ribbons than Carter
had liver pills. She was the Tidewater
counterpart to Mrs. Samuel Hamilton,
legendary exhibitor at the Philadelphia Flower Show.

She dreamed of a glorious Mathews
arboretum at Glebe and Long Roads.
(Maybe helping provide for a period
garden at the Tompkins Cottage would
serve as a perfect memorial).

Maxine gave us a Crimson Candles Camellia from the Maymount Flower Show years back. It blooms in mid-winter with flowers that look like little red satin bells. It was and shall be Maxine's Camellia for ever and ever.
