Michael Toole Obituary

YORKTOWN - Michael F. Toole, 46, of Yorktown, died quietly at home Thursday after a courageous 14-month battle with brain cancer.
Born in Smithfield, N.C., the son of Frederick and Betty Bingham Toole, Mike lived in Hampton Roads for 24 years. He leaves his wife of 15 years, Tracey Millard Toole, and his children, Mack, 13, and KK, 11.
He came to the Daily Press' sister publication, the Times-Herald, in 1985. He became a front page designer and business editor at the Daily Press, employing his substantial talents on stories, headlines and visual displays. He began working for the Kaufman & Canoles law firm in 2000, becoming an attorney, specializing in real estate law, in 2003.
Mike was an avid bicyclist, often taking long treks with the 'Killer Bees,' a local riding group. He enjoyed playing rugby, debating politics and current events, and rooting for the North Carolina Tar Heels, his alma mater.
He loved spending time with his family and friends, had a great sense of humor and wit, and was passionate about everything he spent time on - from his biking to his incisive political opinions to his work and family life.
Mike received a B.A. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1985; his M.B.A. degree from the College of William and Mary in 1993; and his J.D. from Regent University in 2003. He was a member of the Newport News Bar Association, the Virginia Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
He was accepted in 2008 into the Leadership Institute of the Virginia Peninsula, a program of the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. He was on the advisory board of the Salvation Army Virginia Peninsula and was active in the Running Man Community Association.
Besides his wife, children and parents, Mike also leaves to cherish his memories his sister, Susan Harris and brother-in law, Earl, both of Smithfield, N.C.; brother, James Toole and sister-in-law, Rose, both of Clayton, N.C.; sister, Meta Toole and brother, Butler Toole, both of Smithfield, N.C.
He leaves his niece, Emily Radford; his uncle, Thomas Toole and wife, Myrtle, all of Smithfield, N.C.; his aunt, Sarah T. Wiggs of Selma, N.C.; his great-aunt, Mary Frances Bingham of Smithfield, N.C.; his aunt, Carol B. Kenner of Jeffersonville, Ind.; aunt, Frances B. Mueller of Alexandria; aunt, Eloise Capps of Smithfield, N.C.; his niece, Lynn Fortune and, her husband, Chip and their son, Grayson; his nephew, Brad Gruber. He also leaves many devoted friends who cherished him.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Brain Tumor Society, 124 Watertown St., Suite 2-D, Watertown, MA, 02472.

Hi. I knew Mike back at UNC, when we both worked for the Daily Tar Heel. I just heard this terrible news today. I'm very sorry for your loss. I didn't know Mike well, but I have a clear memory of him from the DTH - he's smiling and working hard - the epitome of a talented newsman.

Mike was a joy to grow up with in Smithfield, NC. He was so special and unique in the way he always seem to be happy and positive, either constantly smiling or very quick offer a warm grin. If you needed encouragement, he could pick you up. He had a great sense of humor. Mike could make you laugh and was also quick to laugh with you at life's circumstances. With his many gifts and talents, it was his wonderful, positive attitude that I will always treasure. He was a great friend to having growing up. I remember so many moments that blur together, but his happy smile and laugh remain clear in my mind. I remember in the 8th grade, when a teacher asked us to write down the name of someone we would invite to a special guest dinner to speak, and we could list anyone, even those that had passed. Most people listed ordinary celebrities ( I chose Sean Connery--my favorite James Bond actor), and I remember that Mike wrote down Jesus Christ. Mike's choice that day has always stood out to me even to this day. I trust that he can now speak with Him face to face. I miss my friend, but hope to see him again one day. I trust that God will encourage his wife and children with all they need going forward. I truly thank God for Mike Toole and the friend he was to me and so many others. I am grateful that he had a family of his own to share his love with. Much love and blessings to them always. Jimmy Baggett

I had the pleasure of working closely with Michael for several years. He was a tremendous asset to the Newport News Treasurer’s Office. His expertise and knowledge in his legal field provided my staff and me with an invaluable resource. Michael was a most personable individual, always smiling, and always a pleasure to be in his company. He will be deeply missed.

My sincerest sympathies and condolences to Mrs. Toole, and his children, Mack and KK.

God bless you and provide you comfort in this time of loss.

I was so sorry to hear of your loss. The thoughts of many are with you at this time of sorrow. I never had the pleasure of meeting your husband, but his couragous fight was well known at the Victory Ymca.
May your precious memories of him keep you strong. God Bless.

Mike was the king of multitasking. I had the pleasure of working for him in the news dept. at the Daily Press many years ago. His quick-wit, zest for complete accuracy and willingness to guide others to expand their knowledge were just a few of the traits I admired about him. He packed more into one day than most pile into a week. He will be missed by many.

Mike's vibrancy and passion will be long remembered by those of us who knew and cared for him. My favorite memories include watching him puzzle out a new layout idea, raking his hair with a pencil in his hand, wearing muddied rugby clothes amid the busy newsroom. Trying to decode his NC drawl. After-hours at Ray's. God bless, Mike.

I wish I could come and share in the service honoring his life. Sympathies and condolences to his family and friends.

I am having a hard time convincing myself that Mike is really gone. However, I know how blessed I am to have known Mike and to have been professionally influenced by his work ethic, knowledge and humor. It will be daily that I miss Mike and will think of him often. Tracey, Mike & KK - I am so very sorry for your loss most of all. May you find comfort and peace in the Lord Jesus.
