Myrna WILEY Obituary

HAMPTON - On Monday morning Jan. 11, 2010, after a short but courageous battle with cancer, Our Lord called Myrna 'Bunnie' Christine Wiley to be with him in Heaven.
Ms. Bunnie as she was affectionately called was born on second street in Buckroe Beach on Easter Sunday, April 12,1936.
Bunnie graduated from St. Vincent High School, in Newport News in 1954. Following graduation she entered St. Cecilia Convent, and was a teaching sister of the order, for 16 years. Her assignments included schools in Tennessee and Virginia, notably assignments at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Newport News and St. Mary Star of the Sea in Phoebus. She was a graduate of Siena College, Memphis, Tenn.
In 1969 she felt a new calling to return to the secular life while staying in the educational field and she secured a position teaching in Dallas, Texas. A year later she returned to the Peninsula to teach at Bassette Elementary in the Hampton School System. After teaching a year she met her husband to be, Bill, they married and started a family. After a leave of absence to raise three children she returned to St. Mary's in Phoebus where she taught for many years.
In 1995, a yearning for a new challenge led her to Newport Academy, New Horizons Regional Center to teach special education students. She still held this position at the time of her passing. She loved all of her students and bragged about their accomplishments.
She was very active in the community and her church serving as Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout Den Leader, and team mother for softball and baseball teams. She also volunteered for many organizations including Relay For Life. She taught religious education and was on the Pregnancy Solutions Hotline team at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.
Bunnie was very family oriented and a devoted wife and mother. She especially took pride in being "Nanny" to her three grandchildren, who were her pride and joy.
Her mother, Alma Christine Love, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years, William R. Wiley Jr.; a daughter, Mary Lugo and her husband, William of Yorktown; two sons, Army Major James R. Wiley and his wife, Kristen, now in the Kingdom of Bahrain and William R. Wiley III and his fiancEe, Melinda Andrews of Raleigh, N.C.; her three grandchildren, William (Will) Lugo, Emma Lugo and Noah Wiley; her father, Robert L. Love; two brothers, Lance Love and James Love; and a sister, Marilyn Love all of Lufkin, Texas, as well as seven nieces.
A Christian Wake service will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home conducted by Msgr. Robert Perkins, pastor of Immaculate Conception Church, Hampton. The family will receive friends following until 8:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Relay For Life or St. Cecilia Convent, Nashville, Tenn.
A wake service will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, with visitation following. A mass of Christian Resurrection will be celebrated by Father Lawrence Mullaney Jr. and Msgr. Perkins at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church in Tabb at 6:30 p.m. Friday evening, with burial Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News. "Bunnie" was a dear friend of my older sister Mary Ann. For many years as a youngster growing up in Buckroe in the summer I thought Mary Ann had adopted a new sister, Bunnie. Their friend-ship continued over their later years.
