Otelia W. McCOY

HAMPTON - Otelia Winifred 'Winnie' Hopson McCoy, daughter of the late Harry B. Hopson and Maurice Wright Hopson, was born Jan. 7, 1929, and departed this life June 17, 2010, at Hampton Sentara Hospital. A native of Hampton, Va., she was the eldest of 11 children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer McCoy; and four brothers, Roy Hopson, Johnny Hopson Riddick, Claude Hopson, and Donald Hopson.
Winnie is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Johnson; one sister, Harriet Bass (Nelson); five brothers, Harry Hopson (Mattie), Levi Hopson (Ardelle), James Hopson (Willena), Carl Hopson (Barbara), and Wayman Hopson; four sisters-in-law, Elva Riddick, Ruth Hopson, Doris Hopson, and Hattie Setzer; a brother-in-law, Frederick McCoy; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Reared in Hampton, Winnie graduated from George P. Phenix High School and attended Virginia State College. She spent her early adult years in Norfolk, Va., and then returned to Hampton, where she worked in retail sales. Her last eight years were spent as a resident of Riverside Convalescent Center in Hampton.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, at First Baptist Church, 229 N. King Street, Hampton. Interment will follow at the Hampton National Cemetery, University Section.
